FEMA head says he was unaware that the US has a hurricane season David Richardson, who has led FEMA since early May, made the remark during a briefing. The staff were left baffled, not sure if Richardson meant it literally or as a very inappropriate joke. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, FEMA’s parent agency, tried to do some quick damage control, and said Richardson was joking, and that FEMA is fully prepared for the coming natural disasters. Considering that a great number of top FEMA officials resigned, the staff cuts, and significant reductions in hurricane preparations, this hurricane season, which is forecast to be above normal, will be particularly difficult to manage. The US hurricane season officially began on Sunday, June 1st, and lasts through November. This year’s season is expected to bring as many as 10 hurricanes. Trump triumphs in Poland Poland’s PiS candidate Karol Nawrocki - a Trump-backed conservative - wins presidential election. The result deals a major blow to Donald Tusk’s pro-EU agenda. Poland’s newly elected president is seen as the embodiment of traditional, patriotic values — which goes against Prime Minister Tusk’s current direction. Despite his government existing separately from the presidency, Narwrocki’s power to veto laws will make it difficult for Tusk to press his pro-European agenda. Nawrocki’s win is also a problem for Zelenskyy-led Ukraine. The president opposes the idea of Ukraine’s membership in NATO, and is the most critical of Zelenskyy’s regime out of all Polish leaders to date. The Senate this week is taking up the massive budget package containing President Trump's second-term agenda, a measure that squeaked through the House with a one-vote margin, solely with Republican votes. Its path through the Senate seems destined to be similarly narrow, with the package almost certain to be revised, since parts of it are opposed by a handful of GOP senators critical to its passage.  House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, recently ventured to the other side of the U.S. Capitol to remind Republican senators "that we are one team" and pleaded with them to keep the bill substantially intact. "I encouraged them to make as few modifications as possible, remembering that I have a very delicate balance on our very diverse Republican caucus over in the House," Johnson said in an interview with "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan."  Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, acknowledged that balance, but told reporters "the Senate will have its imprint" on the bill. He can afford three "no" votes from Republicans if all Democrats vote to block its passage in the Senate, and there are no absences.  GOP Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky has already indicated he opposes the bill because it will "explode the debt." Senator Joni Ernst, Republican of Iowa, had a gloomy message for constituents at a town hall in Butler County, Iowa, on Friday morning: “We all are going to die.” Ms. Ernst was fielding questions about cuts to Medicaid that were included in the domestic policy bill working its way through Congress, when someone in the audience yelled out that the effect would be that “people are going to die.”

US ports have been seeing pandemic-level declines in imports, so good news on tariffs was just what port officials were hoping for. For awhile on Wednesday, it looked like retailers and ports got exactly that, with a court blocking many of President Donald Trump’s tariffs. But a federal appeals court on Thursday quickly paused that ruling. That kind of whiplash underscores why, even when there’s news of tariffs easing, goods don’t start flowing into US ports right away. And that could mean fewer goods on store shelves in the coming months, cutting into available choices and raising prices for everyday Americans. Indeed, last month, imports declined by a whopping $68.4 billion, according to advanced trade data released by the Census Bureau on Friday. This came after retailers stocked up on goods in March, aiming to get ahead of tariffs. But the stunning decline in imports could mean retailers have less of an inventory buffer, leaving them less able to avoid paying future tariffs — and that could lead to price increases for US consumers.

“I think there was an expectation that all of a sudden everything would start coming in again. I don’t think you’ve seen that huge rush to bring everything in again because I think folks are still being cautious on how this is going to proceed,”

said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation. President Donald Trump ratcheted up his pressure campaign against Harvard University on Wednesday, suggesting that the institution should limit the number of international students it enrolls.

"I think they should have a cap of maybe around 15%, not 31%,"

Trump has repeatedly claimed the percentage of foreign students enrolled at Harvard is 31%, even though the university’s own data indicate that in the 2024-25 academic year, 6,793 international students were enrolled, representing 27.3% of its student body. President Donald Trump said Wednesday he is nominating his former criminal defense lawyer Emil Bove, who as a high-ranking Justice Department official was behind the controversial move to drop the corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, to become a federal appeals court judge. President Trump issued a flurry of clemency actions on Wednesday, according to a White House official familiar with the matter, wiping the convictions or cutting sentences for more than two dozen people including political allies, a rapper and the co-founder of a Chicago gang who was serving multiple life sentences for violent crimes. A blitz of pardons and commutations this week benefited a hodgepodge of recipients, including Larry Hoover, the former leader of the highly organized gang, the Gangster Disciples, which had nearly 30,000 members in Chicago alone and raked in $100 million a year trafficking drugs across the country. It also included those who have expressed political support or echoed the president in claiming they had been unfairly targeted because of their political affiliation.
