Symbols in the novel Lord of the Flies: Piggy’s Glasses Piggy is the most intelligent, rational boy in the group, and his glasses represent the power of science and intellectual endeavor in society. This symbolic significance is clear from the start of the novel, when the boys use the lenses from Piggy’s glasses to focus the sunlight and start a fire. The Signal Fire The signal fire burns on the mountain, and later on the beach, to attract the notice of passing ships that might be able to rescue the boys. As a result, the signal fire becomes a barometer of the boys’ connection to civilization. In the early parts of the novel, the fact that the boys maintain the fire is a sign that they want to be rescued and return to society. When the fire burns low or goes out, we realize that the boys have lost sight of their desire to be rescued and have accepted their savage lives on the island. The signal fire thus functions as a kind of measurement of the strength of the civilized instinct remaining on the island. Ironically, at the end of the novel, a fire finally summons a ship to the island, but not the signal fire. What does the Conch Shell Symbolize? William Golding uses the conch, or large white shell, to symbolize a civilized society that organizes itself through democratic participation. In the beginning, the boys use the conch to establish a community reminiscent of their familiar British social system, a civil society based on discourse and assembly.يستخدم ويليام جولدنج المحارة، او الصدفة الكبيرة ذات اللون الابيض، للرمز الى المجتمع المتحضر الذي ينظم نفسه من خلال المشاركة الديمقراطية. في البداية، يستخدم الصبيان المحارة لتأسيس مجتمع يذكرنا بنظامهم الاجتماعي البريطاني المألوف، مجتمع مدني يقوم على الخطاب والاجتماع. The conch is a symbol of freedom of expression and civic action that even the youngest boy can easily understand and embrace, but the concepts themselves prove difficult to uphold in practice, and the conch's power soon diminishes as boys resist the constraints of democracy. Ralph is frustrated that the meetings he uses the conch to put together don't actually accomplish much. While the boys agree to his plans for their society in principle, it is impossible to enforce the rules, because there are no consequences for disobedience. ان المحارة هي رمز لحرية التعبير والعملية المدنية التي يمكن حتى للصبي الاصغر ان يفهمها ويعتنقها بسهولة، ولكن المفاهيم نفسها تثبت صعوبة الالتزام بها في الممارسة العملية، وسرعان ما تتضاءل قوة المحار عندما يقاوم الأولاد قيود الديمقراطية. يشعر رالف بالإحباط لان الاجتماعات التي يستخدم المحارة لتجميعها لا تحقق الكثير في الواقع. في حين ان الاولاد يوافقون على خططه لمجتمعهم من حيث المبدأ، الا انه من المستحيل تطبيق القواعد، لانه لا توجد عواقب للعصيان. The conch also serves as a symbol of the strength and weakness of the symbols themselves. The conch represents civil discourse on the island, and it only works if all the children believe in its power and the necessity of the idea it symbolizes. The conch is a fragile and vulnerable being, both literally and figuratively, which is why Piggy, Ralph, and even Jack treat it with care. However, once Jack gets a taste of power, and realizes that he can effectively control the boys through violence, both actual and implied, he loses his faith in the conch as a symbol. تعمل المحارة ايضًا كرمز لقوة الرموز نفسها وضعفها. تمثل المحارة الخطاب المدني في الجزيرة، ولا تعمل الا اذا كان جميع الأولاد يؤمنون بقوتها وضرورة الفكرة التي ترمز إليها. تعتبر المحارة كائنًا هشًا وضعيفًا بالمعنى الحرفي والرمزي، ولهذا السبب يعاملها Piggy ورالف وحتى جاك بعناية. ومع ذلك، بمجرد ان يذوق جاك طعم القوة، ويدرك انه يستطيع السيطرة بشكل فعال على الأولاد من خلال العنف، الفعلي والضمني، فإنه يفقد إيمانه بالمحارة كرمز.
