HIGH-YIELD TOPIC FOR NORCET & RRB NURSING EXAMS
📚 CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) & BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS)
CPR and BLS are life-saving emergency procedures and frequently asked in NORCET and RRB exams as direct questions.
Knowledge of correct technique and sequence is critical for exam and clinical practice.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR)
CPR is an emergency procedure performed to maintain circulation and oxygenation in a patient with cardiac arrest or respiratory failure until spontaneous circulation is restored.
PRIMARY SURVEY (ABCDE)
• A – Airway: Ensure airway patency
• B – Breathing: Check for spontaneous breathing
• C – Circulation: Check pulse and start compressions if absent
• D – Disability: Assess level of consciousness
• E – Exposure: Look for injuries or bleeding
BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) STEPS
1. Check responsiveness – tap shoulder, shout
2. Call for help – activate emergency response
3. Check pulse and breathing – no more than 10 seconds
4. Chest compressions – 100–120 per minute, depth 5–6 cm
5. Airway – tilt head, lift chin
6. Rescue breaths – 2 breaths after 30 compressions in adults
7. Continue cycles – 30:2 until help arrives or patient revives
ADULT CPR
• Compression rate: 100–120/min
• Compression depth: 5–6 cm
• Ratio: 30 compressions : 2 breaths
• Minimize interruptions in chest compressions
CHILD CPR (1 year–puberty)
• Compression depth: 1/3 of chest
• Ratio: 30:2 for single rescuer, 15:2 for two rescuers
INFANT CPR (<1 year)
• Use two fingers for single rescuer
• Two thumbs encircling hands technique for two rescuers
• Ratio: same as child CPR
DEFIBRILLATION
• Early defibrillation increases survival rate
• AED (Automated External Defibrillator) can be used by trained personnel
• Place pads on right upper chest and left lateral chest
• Follow AED instructions
AIRWAY MANAGEMENT
• Head tilt and chin lift
• Jaw thrust in suspected cervical injury
• Suction secretions if present
• Maintain airway until spontaneous breathing resumes
COMMON ERRORS IN CPR
• Inadequate depth or rate of compressions
• Excessive interruptions
• Delayed defibrillation
• Incorrect hand placement
• Not calling for help immediately
NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assess victim quickly
• Start CPR immediately if indicated
• Monitor patient’s response
• Ensure proper technique and timing
• Document event and interventions
• Educate staff and family on CPR basics
AIIMS NORCET EXAM FOCUS
• Compression to ventilation ratio
• Depth and rate of compressions
• Differences in adult, child, infant CPR
• AED pad placement
• BLS sequence (CAB or ABC depending on guideline)
• Common CPR errors
KEY MEMORY POINTS
• Adult: 30:2, 5–6 cm depth, 100–120/min
• Child/Infant: 15:2 with two rescuers
• Head tilt-chin lift for airway
• Early defibrillation improves survival
• Minimize interruptions in compressions
Effective CPR and BLS performed by nurses can significantly increase survival in cardiac arrest and other life-threatening emergencies.
