India’s pollution crisis is no longer just an environmental issue — it is increasingly a health, education and economic challenge.
From recurring asthma and possible impacts on fertility to contaminated water, lost productivity and disrupted schooling, pollution can impose costs that extend far beyond hospital bills.
A Dalberg report estimates that air pollution cost India around $260 billion in 2024 — nearly 6% of GDP, including losses linked to reduced productivity, premature deaths and lower consumer spending.
For children, severe pollution can also mean school closures, online classes and missed learning — particularly for those without reliable digital access.
The larger question for India’s development is clear: Can cities sustain economic growth if pollution continues to undermine human health and productivity?

India’s pollution crisis isn’t just affecting public health — it is also putting pressure on household finances.
Per capita out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure increased by nearly 32%, rising from ₹2,097 in 2017–18 to ₹2,767 in 2022–23.
During the same period, average AQI across reporting Indian cities remained well above the ‘good’ air quality category, highlighting the persistent burden of air pollution.
The numbers underline a larger concern: as poor air quality increases health risks, households may face a growing financial burden from medical expenses.
