أدِرْ ذِكْرَ مَن أهْوى ولو بمَلامِ
فإنّ أحاديثَ الحَبيبِ مُدامي
ليَشْهَدَ سَمْعِي مَن أُحبُّ وإن نأى
بطَيفِ مَلامٍ لا بطَيفِ مَنام
فلي ذِكْرُها يَحلو على كلّ صيغةٍ
وإنْ مَزَجوهُ عُذِّلي بخِصام

البكاء علامة على وجود كائن أكثر عفّةً وصلاحًا، والشفقة هي الشعور الذي يجعل معظم الناس يميلون إلى البكاء لأنه مزيج من الحب والحزن (كل العواطف بالنسبة إلى ديكارت هي مزيج من الانفعالات الستة الأساسية:
العجب والحب والكراهية والرغبة والفرح والحزن). كتب ديكارت عن (الحب)): ((إن إرسال الكثير من الدم نحو القلب يجعل الكثير من الأبخرة تخرج من العين، وبرودة الحزن التي تؤخر هيجان هذه الأبخرة تجعلها تتحول إلى دموع)».
