Brutalism, a bold architectural movement characterized by raw concrete and monumental forms, found notable expression in Kenya through several iconic structures. Emerging in the mid-20th century, Brutalist architecture is defined by its unapologetically stark aesthetics, geometric shapes, and the extensive use of béton brut—raw, unfinished concrete. This style was especially influential in post-independence African nations, where it symbolized modernity, strength, and a break from colonial architectural traditions. In Nairobi, buildings that used this architectural style include KICC, Hilton, UoN main campus, CBK and Kahawa house.

Historic Nairobi: Macmillan Library and City Market. Quick Facts: Macmillan Library: Built in 1931, it's Nairobi’s oldest library, protected by its own Act of Parliament. City Market: Opened in 1932, known for its Art Deco design and bustling trade in flowers, meat, and crafts. Both landmarks reflect Nairobi’s rich blend of history, culture, and community.

🕰️ A Snapshot of Colonial Nairobi - Delamere Avenue (now part of Kenyatta Avenue) was named after Lord Delamere, a British settler influential in colonial Kenya’s early development. The architecture—arched windows, brick façades, and flat roofs—mirrors European styles, but adapted to East African climate and materials.

Mombasa - Nairobi highway in the 1920s. In the 1920s, three explorers paused in Tsavo on their way to Mombasa—botanist Evelyn Hartley, zoologist Dr. Kamau Njoroge, and their guide Mwangi. The dusty photo captured a rare moment of calm before they continued their journey through elephant territory. Their expedition would later help bridge African and Western ecological research, born from adventure and collaboration in the wild.
