In many slab strengthening projects, increasing the structural capacity is essential, but adding significant dead load is not. Unlike reinforced concrete or steel jacketing, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) provides exceptional tensile strength while adding almost no weight or thickness. It can be installed rapidly with minimal disruption, maintains the original ceiling clearance, offers outstanding corrosion resistance, and reduces labor and construction time. When preserving the existing geometry and improving long-term durability are critical, CFRP is often the preferred strengthening solution.
The right strengthening method is not always the strongest one—it is the one that best satisfies the structural, economic, and construction requirements of the project.

On my way today, I came across this deteriorated reinforced concrete bridge. Seeing the exposed reinforcement and extensive corrosion was a reminder that corrosion is one of the most critical challenges facing our aging infrastructure.
Although corrosion has rarely been the focus of my research, it is evident that improving durability and extending the service life of existing structures deserves even greater attention.
Every bridge has a story this one reminds us that maintenance is as important as design.

Traditional steel jacketing remains one of the most reliable techniques for retrofitting reinforced-concrete columns. Steel angles and welded battens enhance confinement, axial capacity, shear resistance, and ductility.
However, emerging materials such as FRP composites, UHPC jackets, textile-reinforced mortar, and shape-memory alloys can provide lighter installation, improved corrosion resistance, and reduced intervention time.
The best retrofit is not always the newest system; it is the solution that achieves the required performance, durability, constructability, and life-cycle economy.

Concrete jacketing remains one of the most effective techniques for strengthening existing reinforced concrete columns. Today, advanced solutions such as steel jacketing, FRP composites, UHPC, and other high-performance materials are expanding the possibilities for faster, lighter, and more durable structural rehabilitation. The future of retrofitting is innovation.

Design Concept: Precast Prestressed Telecom Tower
Pleased to share my conceptual design of a 45 m precast prestressed hybrid telecom tower, combining precast post-tensioned concrete segments with a steel upper mast for improved strength, durability, and rapid construction.
Designed following Eurocodes and TIA-222 principles, this concept demonstrates a sustainable and modular solution for next-generation telecom infrastructure.

Two powerful back-to-back earthquakes struck northern Venezuela on the evening of June 24, 2026 (local time). A magnitude 7.2 foreshock hit first near San Felipe/Yumare in Yaracuy state, followed just 40 seconds later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 mainshock about 23 km southeast of Yumare. Both were shallow (around 10-20 km depth), which intensified the shaking and damage.

Casualties and Impact
• Deaths: At least 164 people confirmed killed (figures from acting President Delcy Rodríguez; earlier reports cited lower numbers around 32, with the toll rising as rescues continue). @bbc.com
• Injuries: Nearly 1,000 (around 971 reported).
• Missing: Over 11,000 people reported missing in some updates.
• Widespread building collapses in Caracas and other areas, with people trapped in rubble. Videos show structures pancaking and residents fleeing into streets. bbc.com
The quakes caused severe damage to homes, infrastructure, and buildings in the capital and northern coastal regions. This is described as Venezuela’s most powerful earthquake event in over a century. A state of emergency has been declared.

Sharing a small open-source project: a complete OpenSeesPy model of a reinforced-concrete bridge pier on a drilled-shaft foundation, with soil–structure interaction modelled through a Beam-on-Nonlinear-Winkler-Foundation (p–y / t–z / q–z) spring system.
The script runs the full workflow — gravity, modal, pushover, and nonlinear time-history analyses — and generates plots of the model, deformed shape, capacity curve, and seismic response. Fiber sections capture confined-core concrete and reinforcement nonlinearity; the soil springs follow the API RP2A sand method.
Everything is parameterised and reproducible in a single file, with a synthetic ground motion built in so there are no external dependencies. Useful as a teaching example or a starting point for SSI studies.
Code and figures on GitHub "https://lnkd.in/gDnWmGAs" feedback and improvements welcome.

I’m happy to share that our paper has been published in #Engineering Structures.
This study proposes a novel Gong-type Viscoelastic Damper for the seismic reinforcement of traditional Chinese timber mortise-tenon joints. Inspired by the traditional Dou-gong system, the G-VED provides a reversible, minimally invasive, and heritage-compatible strengthening solution.
I’m grateful to my co-authors, collaborators, and everyone who supported this work.

10-Story Stiffness-Graded RC Frame Analysis Engine
How do you visually audit higher-mode effects and inelastic drift profiles in mid-rise structures?
While standard code-compliant workflows rely heavily on simplified, linear elastic abstractions, performance-based validation requires a deep dive into nonlinear material behavior and transient structural dynamics.
To bridge this gap, I developed an integrated Python simulation pipeline that couples OpenSeesPy for non-linear finite element evaluation with Matplotlib for publication-grade visualization and high-scale modal animation.
The full open-source implementation script is documented and ready for deployment. https://lnkd.in/gAvVT-Pp

Benchmarking Numerical Models with First Principles: OpenSeesPy 2-Story RC Frame Hysteretic Evaluation
In advanced computational structural engineering, building a complex non-linear finite element model is only half the battle. The true validation of any numerical pipeline lies in its alignment with first-principles structural mechanics.
I have put together an open-source OpenSeesPy pipeline designed to simulate the non-linear cyclic performance of a 2-story, 1-bay moment-resisting reinforced concrete frame. To test the robustness of the script under long-span configurations, I updated the layout to a 6.0m bay width featuring deep 400x600mm beams paired with 400x400mm columns.
The complete open-source Python script and simulation engine documentation are now live.
