Aesop's fables are probably one of the best ways to give them an independent moral foundation and a way to view the world that is digestible at an early age, like 4-6. The most critical teaching they receive by this is TRUST. Trust in the importance of their own personal responsibility to develop their judgement. In a typical household a parent will teach their children. "lying is bad" but this results in dropping their kid in a mental wilderness where their child is trapped in confusion where the only internalization available is morality = obedience. In a household where aesop's fables are used as devices for lessons at an early age, teachings on lying and other subjects is different. They get taught the importance of judgement and to separate the moral fluff and negative baggage around the word itself. It is perfectly applicable to lie to a stranger asking you personal information, and it is a moral failing to lie without making a conscious decision before lying because you have sacrificed your own judgement for temporary escape for fragile moral security.
