Sample Essay Band 8.5 --- Job interviewers generally do not ask certain personal questions, but some break the rules by asking personal questions such as age, marital status and religion. What can be done to prevent this type of discriminatory practice? --- Nowadays, the recruitment process has become much tougher - especially without a recommendation. Job interviewers should generally avoid asking questions such as age, marital status, if you have children or what religion you are, however, this is being done in some places even though it is completely against the law in some countries. Nevertheless, this practice is completely unethical despite the law. This essay will further explore this issue before coming to a conclusion. Firstly, irrespective of the law in a country certain questions such as political views, age, sexual orientation, religion or marital status should be frown upon as a mark of respect and good manners in order to avoid discriminating against a candidate. However, as the job market has become incredibly tough and employers are becoming far more choosy than ever. They do not want someone old or in some cases they prefer unmarried female candidates, as married female candidates may get pregnant and this will result in the payment of maternity pay on more than one occasion. Even though this is discriminatory - employers are finding roundabout ways to ask these questions within the legal limits and many are conducting very sneaky practices in order to ask certain questions without "technically" breaking the law. For example, some employers may ask when you graduated high school in order to gauge your age rather than asking the direct question - "How old are you?". The lines between legality are blurred and there should be further measures taken to ensure employers employ fairly. For instance, in the UK certain questions are asked after a candidate has been given a job or during the application process - these include ethnic background, age, sexual orientation and so on. These are optional questions and many companies have quotas to fill to hire fairly and have an equal workforce. However, it is arguable that these questions are being used to hire unfairly, as we cannot ascertain how the responses will be dealt with. In some cases an ethnic candidate being hired over a caucasian candidate to fill a quota has caused outrage among staff. Moreover, there have been questions as to whether the candidate was hired to fill a quota or based on their actual skills, acumen and expertise. Similarly, the same can be said for someone of a specific, age or sexual orientation. On the other hand, countries like the UAE hire locals for higher paid jobs government jobs in order to make sure locals are given fair treatment in a country where almost 85% of the population is foreign. This process is called Emiratisation. Many people have debated the effectiveness of this process, as they claim locals are highly unskilled. Nevertheless, they are being given jobs with high salaries with relatively no experience. Moreover, this is discriminatory, as jobs should be given based on merit, expertise, skills, acumen, practical experience and education. Furthermore, the UK has seen opposite treatment where local British workers have been called lazy and companies such as the sandwich shop - Pret-A-Manger has openly said they prefer hiring European or foreign workers over British, as British people are deemed to be bone idle, lazy and unreliable. To sum up, it is absolutely unfair to discriminate against someone and employers should hire much more fairly. The government should fine employers caught abusing the law and other countries should also create a quota to ensure jobs are given out equally based on experience, skills and acumen, but also equally among the population and not based on a bias of religion, sex, race or otherwise. In order to rectify this issue they should be forced to publish these statistics every year for scrutiny and only then can there be a resolution for this lofty issue. https://t.me/+Rit8FVUJY2RmZjU6

Speaking (B2) Speaking Card 1: A Memorable Journey Talk about a journey you went on. You should say: • where you went • who you went with • what happened on the journey • And explain why it was memorable. One of the most memorable journeys I've ever taken was a trip to Istanbul, Turkey, last summer. I went with my best friend, and we planned it for months in advance. We flew from my city and arrived in Istanbul in the evening. The first thing that struck me was the beautiful architecture — the mix of old and modern was truly fascinating. We visited famous places like the Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar. The journey became memorable because we got lost in a local neighborhood, but instead of panicking, we asked for help and ended up being invited by a local family for tea. It was an unexpected and heartwarming experience. I'll never forget that trip because it taught me to stay calm in unfamiliar situations and enjoy the moment
