In Jyotish, the number 108 serves as the ultimate mathematical and geometric bridge that seamlessly connects the 12 Rashis (zodiac signs) and the 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions). While these two systems divide the 360° zodiacal circle in different ways, they find perfect alignment at the level of the Pada (quarter subdivision). Here is exactly how the mathematics of 108 bridges the two systems: 1. The Nakshatra Division (27 × 4) The zodiacal circle of 360° is divided into 27 equal Nakshatras, making each Nakshatra exactly 13°20′. Each individual Nakshatra is further subdivided into 4 equal quarters called Padas. When we divide the Nakshatra span by four (13°20′ ÷ 4), we find that each Pada measures exactly 3°20′. Multiplying the total Nakshatras by their Padas yields 108 Padas across the entire zodiac (27 Nakshatras × 4 Padas = 108 Padas). 2. The Rashi Division (12 × 9) The same 360° circle is also divided into 12 Rashis, with each Rashi occupying exactly 30°. Because 30° cannot be divided evenly by the 13°20′ Nakshatra span, their boundaries do not always match. However, if we divide a Rashi's 30° span by the size of a single Nakshatra Pada (3°20′), it fits perfectly: 30° ÷ 3°20′ = exactly 9 Pada-sized divisions per Rashi. Multiplying the total Rashis by these divisions yields 108 subdivisions across the entire zodiac (12 Rashis × 9 divisions = 108 divisions). Page 474 of a 500+ Page Astrology Book… and We Are Still Teaching a Sun–Mercury Aspect That Cannot Exist “If the Sun aspects Mercury in Cancer…” — this combination is astronomically impossible under normal Parāśari Graha Dṛṣṭi This is the biggest problem on the page. Sun has only the 7th-house aspect. Therefore, if Mercury is in Cancer, for Sun to aspect Mercury, Sun must be in Capricorn. So the supposed combination becomes: Mercury → Cancer Sun → Capricorn But Budha can never be 180° away from Surya. Mercury is an inferior planet and always remains close to the Sun, with a maximum elongation of roughly 28°. Therefore, in an actual natal horoscope: > Sun in Capricorn + Mercury in Cancer cannot occur. So if the book is claiming ordinary Parāśari aspect, the entire rule beginning: “If the Sun aspects Mercury in Cancer…” cannot physically arise in a horoscope. This is not merely an interpretational disagreement. It is an astronomical impossibility. A good Jyotish student should always perform this check before memorising a yoga: Can this planetary combination actually exist in the sky? There are several old compilations and translated predictive books where rules have been copied without performing this basic astronomical test. There is only one qualification: if the author has defined some special Rāśi dṛṣṭi, Nādi sambandha, argalā-like connection or another non-Parāśari relationship and casually called it an “aspect”, then the rule needs to be interpreted according to that system. But under ordinary Graha Dṛṣṭi, it is wrong.
