Prelims’26 Topic -32/100 Science and technology What is a scramjet engine ? 🚀 SCRAMJET TECHNOLOGY – 🔹 What is a Scramjet? A Scramjet (Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) is an advanced air-breathing engine designed for hypersonic speeds — usually above Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound). 🔹 How is it different from normal rockets? Unlike rockets, a scramjet: Uses oxygen from the atmosphere instead of carrying oxidizer onboard. Works efficiently at extremely high speeds. Makes hypersonic missiles lighter, faster, and capable of longer ranges. 🔹 How does it work? The missile/vehicle is first accelerated to very high speed using a booster rocket. Air entering the engine remains at supersonic speed. Fuel is injected and burns in this high-speed airflow, generating thrust. 🔹 Why is this test important? ✅ Boosts India’s hypersonic missile programme ✅ Enhances capability for next-generation strategic weapons ✅ Can support future high-speed aircraft and space access technologies ✅ Places India among a select group of nations working on hypersonic propulsion 🔹 Key Feature: Scramjets are extremely difficult to develop because combustion must remain stable even when air moves through the engine faster than the speed of sound.
