🎙️Comment of the Embassy of Russia in Norway to Aftenposten (September 4, 2026)
❓The Director of the Norwegian Intelligence Service, Nils Andreas Stensønes, has made the following statement to Aftenposten: «Russia seeks to weaken our ability and willingness to support Ukraine. They are attempting to do so through influence operations, cyberattacks and physical attacks. The defence industry is now particularly exposed». Could you please give a short comment regarding these statements?
💬 Answer: Until Mr Stensønes and other representatives of Western governments back up their accusations of our country with specific facts, supported by convincing evidence, we see no point in commenting on the baseless claims they regularly make.
👆🏻We are convinced that their main aim of such statements is to instil fear in their own populations in order to justify the costly militarisation and securitisation of all spheres of society.

⚡️ In connection with Ukrainian statements aimed at creating direct threats to civil aviation, the competent Russian authorities are in contact with the leadership of the International Civil Aviation Organization (#ICAO) in Montreal.
An urgent appeal on the matter has been sent to ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar.
❗️ The Russian Federation has issued a strong protest over Ukraine’s reckless terrorist actions, which run counter to international law.
The NOTAMs issued by the Ukrainian authorities alleging that Russian airspace is unsafe have been categorically rejected. They have no legal force, distort the actual situation and mislead users of Russian airspace.
We called on the ICAO Secretary General to condemn the Kiev regime’s unlawful interference in civil aviation and the direct threats it is creating, and to take targeted steps to put an end to these actions by Ukraine.
☝️ The Russian Federation remains firmly committed to ensuring the safety of civil aviation.

⚡️ On September 3, Ambassador of Norway to Moscow Heidi Olufsen was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The Ambassador was issued a strong protest over the Norwegian authorities’ September 2 arrest of the Russian research vessel Professor Molchanov, which was in the port of the Russian settlement of Barentsburg on the Spitsbergen (Svalbard) archipelago.
The vessel, arrested at Ukraine’s request, belongs to the Northern Directorate for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Roshydromet. It was making a scheduled voyage from Murmansk to the Russian settlement of Barentsburg, transporting, among others, employees of the Arktikugol Trust and scientists. The Professor Molchanov also delivers supplies essential for the functioning of the Russian settlements of Barentsburg and Pyramiden.
Against the backdrop of Norway’s restrictive measures against Russia on Spitsbergen, introduced in violation of international law, Russian organisations and citizens operating on the archipelago have effectively been placed under blockade.
❗️ Such discrimination against Russians constitutes a direct violation by Norway of the 1920 Svalbard Treaty.
The Ambassador was told that the Russian Side categorically rejects not only the arrest of the Professor Molchanov, but also Norway’s recently intensified actions aimed at restricting Russia’s lawful presence on the archipelago.
Moscow demands that Oslo unconditionally comply with international law, including both the provisions and the spirit of the Svalbard Treaty.
☝️ The Russian Foreign Ministry and the relevant Russian authorities will seek the lifting of the vessel’s arrest.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, the Embassy of Russia in Norway and the Russian Consulate General in Barentsburg remain in close contact with representatives of Russian organisations, as well as with the Norwegian authorities.
The vessel’s crew and passengers are receiving the necessary consular, legal and other assistance.

🎙️ Comment by Ambassador of Russia to Norway Nikolay Korchunov to Russian and Norwegian regarding the arrest of the vessel ‘Professor Molchanov’ in Spitsbergen (September 3, 2026)
The Embassy regards the arrest of the Roshydromet vessel ‘Professor Molchanov’, operated by the Federal State Unitary Enterprise ‘Trust ‘Arktikugol’’, as a politically motivated violation of international law.
It took place pursuant to a ruling by the District Court of Northern Troms and Senja in execution of a decision by the Hague Arbitration Tribunal, whose jurisdiction in the case brought by Naftogaz is not recognised by the Russian side, which did not participate in the proceedings.
Furthermore, the fact that this ruling was issued on the eve of the ‘Professor Molchanov’s’ arrival in Svalbard and was made public precisely whilst the vessel was in Barentsburg clearly indicates the coordinated and deliberate nature of this action.
The lawyers will appeal against the Norwegian court’s decision and defend Russia’s interests in the legal arena. We proceed on the basis that, in the further consideration of the case, the provisions of the 1920 Spitsbergen Treaty and the special legal regime of the archipelago must be taken into account, given that, against the backdrop of Norway’s imposition of illegitimate anti-Russian sanctions on Spitsbergen and the resulting disruption to other logistical routes the ‘Professor Molchanov’ remains, in effect, the sole lifeline for Russian settlements on the archipelago, whose economic activities are conducted in strict accordance with the Treaty.
In this regard, we demand that Norway fulfil its obligations under the Treaty, including treating other parties to the Treaty non-discriminatorily and refraining from using the archipelago as a means of exerting pressure in disputes unrelated to it.
The Russian Embassy in Oslo and the Consulate-General in Barentsburg are in contact with the vessel’s crew and passengers, some of whom are minors. They are currently in the Russian settlement and are being provided with the necessary assistance. The Embassy is in contact with the Norwegian authorities, including the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Governor of Svalbard.
❗️We insist on the immediate release of the vessel and the ensuring of the safety of its passengers and crew.

8️⃣5️⃣ years ago, on August 31, 1941, the first Arctic Convoy, codenamed 'Operation Dervish', arrived in Arkhangelsk, opening the route for delivering strategic supplies to the northern ports of the Soviet Union during #WW2.
Seven ships (six freighters and a tanker), escorted by 15 security vessels, minesweepers and corvettes, embarked on a perilous voyage from Liverpool, pausing to refuel at Hvalfjörður, Iceland. The ships advanced in short columns while constantly changing course to hinder German submarine attacks.
***
According to the allied obligations under the Lend-Lease and other agreements, the United States and the United Kingdom supplied the USSR weapons, military equipment, and other supplies via the Arctic routes. On their return voyages, the ships carried strategic commodities and raw materials.
The first convoy successfully delivered 25'000 tonnes of cargo to Arkhangelsk, equivalent to roughly 300–400 railway wagons or 1'500 modern lorries.
Maritime delivery via the Black Sea or the Baltic Sea was impossible due to the Germans’ swift advances on Crimea and Leningrad. The Pacific route was extremely lengthy. The Arctic route proved to be the shortest option.
The port of Murmansk alone received over 1 million tons of Allied (American and British) Lend-Lease aid cargo during the war years.
Over the course of WWII, 78 Arctic convoys delivered around 4 million tonnes of supplies to the USSR. These shipments included 7'000 aircraft, 5'000 tanks, as well as lorries, cars, fuel, medicine and other essentials that proved vital to defeating the Nazi invaders.
🌟 The Arctic convoys stand as a remarkable example of allied cooperation during #WWII. Their history offers countless acts of heroism and selflessness demonstrated by UK, American and Soviet sailors and pilots, as well as citizens of other nations who escorted the convoys through the harsh conditions of the #Arctic.
More than 3'000 British sailors perished during the war due to explosions, fires or exposure to freezing water. Eighty-five merchant vessels and 16 Royal Navy warships were lost, including two cruisers and six destroyers.

🎙️Comment by the Ambassador of Russia in Norway Nikolay Korchunov for «RIA Novosti» (August 26, 2026)
❓A NATO reconnaissance aircraft (a British RC-135W) took off from a Norwegian airbase for the first time in 70 years and flew towards the Kola Peninsula, according to the newspaper ‘Aftenposten’. Could the Embassy comment on this? How does Russia view such reconnaissance flights by NATO aircraft near its borders, in particular near the Kola Peninsula?
💬 Response: We view the provision of Norwegian air bases for reconnaissance flights directed against our country by the British RC-135W ‘Rivet Joint’ electronic intelligence aircraft and the P-8A ‘Poseidon’ maritime patrol aircraft in an extremely negative light, as a factor deliberately escalating military tensions in the North.
In recent years, NATO countries have, without justification and at a rapid pace – doubling their military presence in some areas, according to their own estimates – increased their military presence and the intensity of provocative training and operational activities in the high latitudes.
Non-regional NATO members have been particularly zealous in this regard, above all Britain and Germany, which are increasingly encroaching on the Arctic, bringing their confrontational bloc-based approaches to a region that, until recently, was characterised by an atmosphere of cooperation and low tension. Worse still, London’s actions are aimed at restricting freedom of navigation, in violation of the fundamental principles of the law of the sea.
NATO members are doing this under the far-fetched pretext of Russian and even Chinese threats, although China, unlike them, is behaving decently, exercising military restraint in the high latitudes and has purely economic and scientific interests in the region. We proceed on the basis that it is exclusively the North Atlantic Alliance and its individual member states that require containment. Russia, for its part, poses no threat to anyone and has no interest in armed confrontation with Norway, Britain or any other NATO country in the North or in any other region.
The provision of Norwegian air bases for the Allies’ military and intelligence activities, which are directed against Russia’s security interests, forms part of Oslo’s long-term policy of ‘eroding’ Norway’s self-imposed restrictions in the military sphere. For decades, including during the most turbulent periods of the ‘Cold War’, these principles helped to reduce tensions between our countries and in the Arctic as a whole; now, following the bloc’s absorption of Finland and Sweden, they have come to hinder NATO’s military preparations on its ‘northern’ flank.
We believe that Norway’s ‘creeping’ abandonment of its own guiding principles regarding foreign military activity on its territory undermines the country’s sovereignty and, contrary to politicians’ assurances, will have a negative impact on its security.
Moreover, the fuelling of unhealthy hype and the Alliance’s confrontational activities regarding Russia’s strategic capabilities on the Kola Peninsula – which British reconnaissance aircraft were specifically monitoring – undermines not only security in the Arctic but also global stability, increasing the risks of unintended escalation and a slide towards direct military conflict, with consequences that would be catastrophic for all and quite likely fatal for many.

⚡️ Article by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, “International Cooperation in the Arctic: Challenges and Opportunities,” published on Arctic.ru
📰 Read in full
✍️ On 19 August, a landmark event took place in Arctic shipping. For the first time, a container ship from China arrived at the port of Murmansk via the Northern Sea Route, a vital part of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor. In collaboration with our international partners this represents the start of a new phase in the development of Russia’s Arctic region, which accounts for at least 10 percent of the country’s GDP and is home to more than 2.5 million of our citizens.
In this regard, I would like to share a number of considerations on how we assess the current state of affairs in the Arctic and how we plan to develop international cooperation there.
***
Russia and international partners in the Arctic
• The Foundations of the Russian State Policy in the Arctic for the Period up to 2035, approved by President Vladimir Putin, focus the efforts of all government bodies on improving the quality of life for the population of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation, promoting economic growth in its territories, protecting the environment and fostering mutually beneficial international cooperation. <...> Foreign policy priorities in high latitudes have been enshrined in the currently effective Concept of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation of March 31, 2023.
• In the Arctic, Russia is seeking to preserve peace and stability, reduce the level of threats to national security, and create favourable external conditions for the country’s socio-economic development. We are open to interaction with all constructively minded foreign countries displaying reciprocal readiness to put these ideas into practice.
• The countries that cooperate closely with us in the Arctic include, first and foremost, China and India. <...> There are prospects for interaction in the Far North with Brazil, Indonesia, Iran and other #BRICS countries.
Challenges for international cooperation in the Arctic
• Preserving the Arctic as an area of peace and cooperation meets the interests of the entire international community, and Russia is undoubtedly interested in this as well.
• Meanwhile, there are those who do not share this point of view. How else can one explain the fact that NATO countries, as well as the Alliance as a whole, are driving the region towards militarisation and creating hotbeds of international tension there? <...> NATO is conducting large-scale military exercises involving non-regional countries and introducing new components of its command-and-control system.
• Such military activity in the Far North poses a direct threat to Russia’s security. <...> NATO and other Western countries make no secret of their true motives, openly declaring their intention to turn the Arctic into a new front for opposing the development of Russia and its like-minded partners.
• One manifestation of the West’s anti-Russian policy has been the disruption of previously effective mechanisms of multilateral cooperation in the Far North. <...> The Arctic Council, established almost 30 years ago, on September 19, 1996, remains the only functioning intergovernmental format. Russia is ready to resume the full-fledged work of the Arctic Council, provided that all parties engage in good faith and take into account the legitimate interests of every participant.
The future of international cooperation in the Arctic
• A glance at the world map makes it clear that Russia has been, is, and will remain a leading Arctic state. <...> The strategic importance of the Arctic to our country’s national interests and security will also continue to grow.
• In our economic activities, we will continue to proceed from the understanding that the Arctic maritime areas form an integral part of the World Ocean.
• Russia’s foreign policy in the Arctic will remain comprehensive and pragmatic. We support the Arctic’s development as an integral part of the broader Eurasian space of security and cooperation.

⚡️ Report by the Russian Foreign Ministry – “On the Kiev Regime’s Unlawful Actions against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Its Clergy and Parishioners” (as of June 2026)
📄 FULL REPORT (PDF)
❗️ The Kiev nationalists, who seized power in 2014 through an unconstitutional armed coup, have since systematically built a multi-layered system of severe restrictions on religious freedom, turning the religious sphere into a testing ground for assaults on human dignity.
The religious dimension has become one of the state’s key instruments for influencing social processes and is actively used to falsify history, legitimise and glorify Nazism, and suppress dissent, as well as secular and religious opposition.
Mass violations of fundamental human rights and freedoms have become a defining feature of the Kiev regime’s years in power.

👉 Zelensky and his entourage are fragmenting the country’s religious landscape, shaping relations with religious organisations and believers according to the degree of their tolerance for the misanthropic ideology imposed by the authorities.
Within this framework, sweeping administrative and legal measures are being implemented to weaken the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (#UOC) to the greatest possible extent in public life, up to and including the dismantling of its governing structures.
The report provides numerous documented examples of discrimination, along with public statements by Ukrainian officials at various levels openly spelling out the ultimate objectives of this campaign – to eliminate the country’s largest religious organisation, force its parishioners and clergy to join the so-called “Orthodox Church of Ukraine”, which is controlled by the authorities and interested business circles, and expropriate UOC property, religious objects and holy sites.
The report’s sections cover:
• Ukraine’s discriminatory laws targeting the UOC • Unlawful actions by Ukrainian special services and law enforcement agencies against the UOC • Illegal mobilisation of UOC clergy • Actions by Ukrainian local authorities and self-government bodies against the UOK • Seizures of UOC churches and illegal re-registration of communities • Pressure exerted by national and regional authorities on major UOC monasteries • Hate speech, unprovoked aggression and violence against UOC clergy and believers • US influence on the evolution of the church crisis in Ukraine • Response of the international community*** The controlled chaos created by the Kiev regime within Ukrainian Orthodoxy has for years enabled the authorities, the OCU and radical groups to carry out forcible seizures of monasteries and churches, illegally re-register religious communities, cultivate hate rhetoric, and perpetrate unprovoked aggression and violence against the clergy and believers of the canonical Church. Members of radical nationalist groups are enlisted to carry out such reprisals, with assurances that they will escape legal responsibility when breaking the law. Ukraine has developed and tacitly legitimised an entire system of backroom arrangements that encourages violations of the fundamental rights and freedoms of believers and clergy. ❌ Religious persecution has now not merely intensified – it has become fully systematic, a fact acknowledged even by many Western politicians. One of the reasons behind the current catastrophic situation facing Orthodox Christians in Ukraine is Western support for the Kiev regime’s religious policy, first and foremost from the US. This issue is also examined in the report. Despite the vast number of documented cases of persecution against the canonical Church and clear violations of Ukraine’s international legal obligations in the field of human rights, these violations have still not received due attention from universal multilateral organisations, including the UN and its leadership, which refrain from issuing detailed reports on the matter or responding firmly, limiting themselves to routine references to the problem. #KievRegimeCrimes
