D-M174 — Mohammad-Hosayn Ayrımlu’s Paternal Lineage
Mohammad-Hosayn Ayrom (1882–1948) was an Iranian military officer and senior political figure during the late Qajar and early Pahlavi periods. He rose through the ranks of the Iranian military and became one of the prominent commanders associated with the government of Reza Shah Pahlavi. He served as Chief of the Gendarmerie and later as Chief of the Imperial Iranian Police, playing an important role in the centralization and modernization of Iran's security institutions. Mohammad-Hosayn Ayrom was of Ayrum (Ayrim) Azerbaijani Turkic tribal origin, belonging to the Ayrimlu → Dashanlu clan, an Oghuz Turkic lineage historically associated with the South Caucasus and northwestern Iran.
A male-line descendant of the Ayrimlu → Dashanlu lineage associated with Teymur Khan Ayromlou has been genetically tested and was found to carry D-M174, the defining mutation of haplogroup D, one of the deepest surviving Y-chromosome lineages. Because Y-DNA is transmitted through the direct paternal line, this result provides evidence for the paternal lineage of Teymur Khan Ayromlou and his male-line ancestors.
Haplogroup D is today concentrated primarily in East Asia, with particularly notable frequencies among populations of Tibet and Japan. Among the ethnic populations of Iran, D-M174 is most notably reported among Iranian Azerbaijanis. Its presence among Iranian Azerbaijanis has been associated with historical gene flow from Central and Inner Asia, potentially reflecting population movements connected to Turkic migrations and later Mongol-era expansions. Based on our database, the most likely downstream subclade for the Ayrom paternal lineage is D-Y14729. This inference is supported by the presence of three other Iranian Azerbaijanis who are currently placed under the D-Y14729 branch. However, the D-Y14729 assignment remains a predicted downstream placement unless confirmed through deeper Y-DNA testing of the descendant.
