Standardization of Regional accents in America and Canada is devastating predicament no one talks about and it is directly linked to migration patterns.
Heritage Canada should encourage and ensure that local cultures and dialects need to preserved. When you have unlimited indians, africans and phillipinos in every area of the country this is quite difficult.
Protecting regional accents, cuisines, and customs should be paramount. Once its lost, there is almost no way to organically revive it.
There is charm about Alberta and Nova Scotia being two distinct places with slighlty diffrent cultures and accents. It will be a tragedy when you visit other parts of Canada and everywhere and everyone is a stand in for Standard Ontario.
Liberals often argue that food and language are political. It is and should be. Identity doesnt simply end at race or ethnic origins.

βIt was all war, war, and how brave our boys were, and I don't care if they were brave, did we have to have it shoved down our throats year after year? I surely think they sat back on their seats in Ottawa and Toronto and thought we were just a bunch of idiots, from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Vancouver Island, and we could be told anything and believe it. Yes, that's it. We could be brainwashed. I don't think it worked. We did what God in our hearts and Holy Mother told us was right, but we'd have done it anyway.
I have a few of those old papers. The one where my son was wounded. I mean the one with his name on the casualty list. When my sister's son was killed on a navy ship. The peace stories, and the D-day landings. I saved those kind of papers as souvenirs and if you want to see just how bad that propaganda was, you should read them.
If there is another war and we survive the first day and if they read this in your book, then maybe those in Ottawa will do something about all the baloney about war and have a few people who can write funny things and make us laugh a bit. Nothing chases the blues like a good laugh.
You're a younger man and perhaps wouldn't understand all that much, but I'll say this. We knew there was a war on. We could read the posters, listen to the radio, and we read the news-papers, and a war isn't ring-around-a-rosy. It is serious, and many people are killed. I think we would have done just as well without all their propaganda if they'd just had the sense God gave a goose. Canadians aren't stupid, you know!β | 111 |

βIt is only a few months since we erected in Ottawa a memorial to the poor fellows who fell in the last war; it is hardly finished before we are into the next war. After the last war many of us dreamed a great dream of an ordered world, a world to be founded on justice. But unfortunately the covenant of the League of Nations was tied up with the Versailles treaty, which I regard as an absolutely iniquitous treaty. Under that treaty we tried to crush Germany. Great Britain undoubtedly has heavy responsibilities at the present time, but I would ask whether we are to risk the lives of our Canadian sons to prevent the action of Hitler in Danzig and in the Corridor. I would ask what it would mean if there were talk about giving up Gibraltar and the Suez and our control of or interest in Palestine or in the African colonies. What is the result?β¦
βI would ask, did the last war settle anything? I venture to say that it settled nothing; and the next war into which we are asked to enter, however big and bloody it may be, is not going to settle anything either. That is not the way in which settlements are brought about. While we are urged to fight for freedom and democracy, it should be remembered that war is the very negation of both. The victor may win; but if he does, it is by adopting the self-same tactics which he condemns in his enemyβ¦
βI suggest that the common people of the country gain nothing by slaughtering the common people of any other country. As one who has tried for a good many years to take a stand for the common people, personally I cannot give my consent to anything that will drag us into another war. It may be said that the boys who stay out are cowards. I have every respect for the man who, with a sincere conviction, goes out to give his life if necessary in a cause which he believes to be right; but I have just as much respect for the man who refuses to enlist to kill his fellowmen and, as under modern conditions, to kill women and children as well, as must be done on every front.
