The bar chart describes age demographics in Iceland across four decades, starting from 1990.
Overall, the most remarkable change was in the size of 25-54 age group, which rose exponentially while the reverse was true for people under 24 and 55-64-year olds. Interestingly, virtually no change was observed in demographic statistics for people aged 65+.
Focusing on the key changes, the proportion of 25-54-year olds – by far the biggest age group in each given year - was reported to have risen by a mere 5% in the first two decades, from its initial standing of a third in 1990. The most considerable increase, however, was recorded between 2010 and 2020 when the percentage of people aged 25-54 went up by about 10%, landing it just below a half. In contrast, the figure for the 15-24 age bracket had fallen by over a tenth by the end of the span, though it stood at just over a fifth initially. Similarly, a gradual decrease could be seen in the percentage of 0-14-year olds, which had declined to just under 20% by 2020.
The demographics figures for the other age groups remained more or less the same. As for people aged 65 and above, their numbers constituted around 15% in all the years, with the exception of 2010 when it rose slightly. Finally, the share of 55-64-year olds saw a negligible decline, accounting for a tenth in 2020.
