Mallorca arrive to this match with no room for excuses. The situation for this last matchday is clear: their chances of survival are not big, but while there is still a door open, this is the match they have to win. There is no other way to look at it.
What surprises me most is seeing Mallorca in this position with the squad they have. This is not a team that, on paper, should be fighting so close to relegation. I would even say that, with their best eleven, they had enough quality to be much closer to the European places than to the bottom of the table. The problem has not been a lack of talent. The problem has been consistency, mentality in key moments and the way they have competed in the most important games. Their last two performances have been poor, and that is exactly why this match becomes even more important. They need a reaction, and they need it now.
Looking at their starting eleven, I still see a lot of quality. Virgili gives them something different in the final third, with personality and the ability to break defensive lines. Muriqi remains a huge reference point, not only because of his goals, but because of how he conditions defenders. He can receive direct balls, attack crosses, win second balls and allow Mallorca to play higher up the pitch. He has scored 22 goals so far, and jsut Mbappe, with 24, has scored more in the league. Samu Costa is another key piece, a player with intensity, legs and character in midfield, and the fact that he has been called up by Portugal says a lot about his level.
Mallorca have also been stronger at home, and that is another important part of this game. Son Moix has to become a place where the team plays with urgency but also with control. They cannot afford to be anxious from the first minute, because that can lead to rushed decisions and unnecessary mistakes. But they do need to impose rhythm, win duels and make Oviedo feel from the beginning that this match means much more for the home side.
Oviedo, honestly, arrive in a completely different emotional state. They are already relegated, bottom of the table, and the season is finished for them. Even when players want to compete professionally, the intensity is never the same when there is nothing left on the line. It would not surprise me to see rotations, minutes for players who may be part of the project next season, and less importance given to some of the regular starters, especially with many squad decisions already looking towards Segunda.
The absence of Fede Viñas is massive for them. He has been their top scorer, with nine goals, and their most decisive attacking player. Without him, Oviedo lose their main source of danger and the one footballer who could really make Mallorca nervous if the game became open. There could even be changes in goal, with Aarón Escandell possibly rested after being one of their best players of the season. If that happens, Oviedo would be even more weakened in a game where they already look short on motivation.
I expect Mallorca to dominate territory and spend long periods in Oviedo’s half. The key will be patience. They need to use the wide areas, put balls into the box for Muriqi, and let players like Virgili attack one against one situations. At the same time, Samu Costa and the midfield have to protect against transitions, because the only real danger would be Mallorca opening themselves too much out of desperation.
For me, this is a match where motivation, home advantage and squad quality all point in the same direction. Mallorca are playing for their life, while Oviedo are already thinking about the next chapter in second division. In that kind of context, the team with more quality and more urgency has to impose itself. | 830 |
