"The Raven."
Carl Spitzweg, 1845.
The image of the raven became especially popular in the first half of the 19th century thanks to the poetics of German Romanticism. Everyone knows the Romantics' love for the mysterious, frightening secret forces of black magic, which have since captivated the imagination of enlightened Europeans. Thus, the painting, with a classically painted landscape, which manifested itself in a restrained dark brown color scheme, carries a mystical connotation. It seems that in Spitzweg's time it would have been suitable for the study of a wealthy burgher with a love of art.
