Do you put off the task until the last minute or get on with it in advance. 🚴 🚴 🚴 🚴 🚴 🚴 I studied politics at university and I had to write a lot of essays. During the first couple of years these essays stressed me out. I would spend at least a week reading up on the topic and jotting down a lot of notes, and then I would leave myself 2 or 3 days to put the essay together before turning it in. However, in my final year I started putting off my essays until the last day. This turned out to be a great system. It took away the days of stress leading up to a deadline and it really focussed my mind when the time to write came around. Consequently, my marks went up. There was, though, one time when my system nearly let me down. As usual, I finished my essay at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning and went to bed. The next day I didn't have any lectures so I got up late and I was chilling out in my hall of residence when it suddenly dawned on me that I hadn't turned in my essay! The deadline was 13:00 and it was already midday, so I jumped on my bicycle and raced across London. The rain was pouring down and I remember that my bike was sliding around all over the place, but I made it to the politics faculty with 20 minutes to spare. I quickly logged on to a computer, printed off the essay and dropped it into the box just before my time ran out. It was a close shave! 🪒 🪒 🪒 🪒 🪒

Phrasal Verbs Forever | Day 5️⃣ 🔗 Lesson page 🔗 Buy the course (open in Chrome/Safari/Yandex) Writing task: Tell me about a competition that you took part in When I was growing up I played a lot of tennis. I took up the sport when I was 7 or 8, and when I was 9 I was good enough to take part in my first competition - the Sheffield and District under 10s. I still remember turning up for the first round with my water bottle and my snacks, feeling very grown up. I was very up for it, and although I wasn’t the most skilful player I never gave up. I put in a lot of effort and, with my Mum cheering me on, I managed to get through to the semi-finals. I had to take on a boy who was much bigger, stronger and more experienced than me. I put up a good fight, but I couldn’t pull off an unlikely victory and he knocked me out. I hated losing and so I was feeling pretty down after the match, but there was a silver lining which cheered me up. The organisers had to single out a young player for the ‘most promising newcomer’ award, and they opted for me. So I still got my hands on a trophy. 🏆

My wife had been going on at me for years about getting into social media. I knew that she was right, but I kept putting it off because I did not feel up to to taking on a new challenge. I was working at a school in England, but then Covid broke out and I ended up in Petrozavodsk and out of work. Of course, nobody was allowed to go out and so everybody was online all the time. So it was a perfect time to bring in new followers. Over the next two years I put up new content 2-3 times a week. I brought out several courses, but none of them brought in much money. However, I didn’t give up and in summer 2022 my blog really took off. A couple of posts went viral and got me up to 100 000 followers. In September 2022 more than 100 people signed up for my Sound English course, and since then I have never looked back. My hard work over the first two years had finally paid off! PS: I hope this post doesn’t sound like showing off!
