This project aims to trace the ancestry of Indians and investigate the origins of the heart disease and diabetes epidemics that currently affect the population. Indian scientists have analyzed 83,000 DNA samples, revealing important insights into how heart disease and diabetes have become entrenched in the Indian genome. Notably, they found that the gene responsible for digesting lactose, which is needed to process milk, is absent in all Indians except for those from Haryana. Additionally, scientist K. Thangaraj has also explained that centuries of marriages within their own caste or community have led to mutations in a recessive gene known as MYBPC3, contributing to the prevalence of heart disease and diabetes among Indians.
