The Chapel of St. Michael in the town of Le Puy-en-Velay. The city itself is located in the province of Auvergne, a famous territory with a volcanic past.
The Chapel of St. Michael rises 280 feet above the city, as it is built on a basalt rock. There are 268 stone steps leading to the entrance. The Chapel of St. Michael was built in the 10th century, the bell tower was completed two centuries later.
In 1955, archaeologists involved in the restoration of the chapel discovered expensive icons and objects of worship hidden in the altar, today they are on public display. Since 1998, this temple has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
