With no established legislation on protections for customers, these practices are rolled out without explicit consent, claimed to be in the interests of reducing crime and improving staff safety 🤔 Add to this is the layering of technology and data points, such as; Loyalty card data EFTPOS/card payments Device ID tracking via Bluetooth and WiFi scanning (operates by default on Apple and Android phones) Most people wouldn't be aware that these retail stores have sensors throughout their stores that track you/your device's movement thought the store via this background scanning, which operates even when you Bluetooth and WiFi Antenna are supposedly switched off. The technology function was rolled out to smartphones during the era of the CON-VID contact tracing apps. Solutions What can you do? ✅ Buy Local from family owned grocers, butchers, bakers, direct to farm orders and any other source that chooses to respect your privacy ✅ Pay in cash ✅ Search for WiFi and Bluetooth Scanning in your phone settings and ensure it is turned off (Off by default on devices with a de-Googled Operating System) ✅ Stop posting photos to social media, turn off facial recognition in photos and opt out of social media AI. The system relies on fresh data being fed to it 24/7, so cut the cord. For some who has purchased a device off us, when setting up your phone we change your Browser default search engine to Presearch. Some of you had asked questions why it's not letting you search and asking you to sign in now. Here's why: Unfortunately, Presearch closed their doors and is no longer available as of the 27th July 2026. They had the goal to reach one million legitimate daily searches needed to be sustainable and recent trends made reaching this goal unrealistic. You may be aware that the Australian Government is testing the launch of the Wireless Emergency Alert system on July 27th 2026, and will broadcast to every Australia mobile phone by default. We have received many questions about this, please see below for more information. According to the Aus Alert website, you can not stop your device from receiving Critical Alerts. The only way to not receive Critical Alerts is to turn off your device or put it in aeroplane mode during the emergency. This is not their recommendation and they advise to keep alerts turned on for your safety. Some people may need to turn off alerts. If receiving a Priority Alert might disrupt you or cause you or a family member to feel unsafe, you can choose to opt out. In Summary: You can not turn off Critical Alerts but you can choose to turn off Priority Alerts. You can find this information and more on their official website: https://www.ausalert.gov.au/receiving-alert/turning-alerts-off How To Turn Off Alerts: For Android users go to Settings under Safety & emergency or Emergency alerts. Click on Wireless emergency alerts and choose which alerts you want to turn off or keep on. Although a de-Googled phone is more private by default, you must manually opt out of network-initiated alerts as they are automatically enabled by your network. For iPhone users, go to your Settings under Notifications, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page until you see Aus Alerts. Choose which alerts you want to turn off or keep on. Please note: If you have not updated your iPhone to the latest iOS, you will not see this option. You will find out on Monday whether you will still receive the test alert or not. Alternative Solutions: For other solutions in the event of an emergency, a battery powered AM/FM radio is a private and versatile tool to stay up to date of major events. A handheld UHF radio can also be a reliable alternative to mobile network communications in emergency situations. Each state also has both email and RSS feed alerts that can be setup for real-time alerts. What is it? Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) is a system that sends a warning message directly to Android and Apple phones in a specific area during a major emergency. While designed for public safety, it does present several privacy considerations that users should be aware of. What are the implication for your privacy? Location Data Collection: To deliver geographically targeted alerts (such as AMBER Alerts or local weather warnings), your phone's general location information must be available to the alert system. While precise GPS isn't constantly tracked, cell tower triangulation establishes your approximate location. Carrier Data Sharing: Your mobile carrier has access to your location when you're connected to their network. They share this aggregated, anonymised location data with alert authorities to determine which phones should receive targeted alerts. Potential for Future Expansion: The current system is limited to specific alert categories, but the infrastructure exists that could potentially be expanded for additional government communications in the future. Metadata Storage: While the content of alerts is temporary, your device may maintain metadata about received alerts, which could theoretically be accessed through forensic analysis of your device. No Direct User Control: Unlike many privacy settings, WEA operates on an opt-out rather than opt-in basis, meaning your device is automatically included unless you specifically disable the feature. Network-Level Monitoring: The system requires some level of network monitoring to function effectively, which inherently means your phone's presence on the network is being tracked for alert purposes. Other considerations: It's worth noting that these privacy considerations are could be considered balanced against the potential benefits of the system. The data collection may be limited to what's necessary to deliver relevant alerts rather than comprehensive surveillance, though the data exposure concerns above and their potential to expand in the future deserve thorough consideration. What action can you take? If you're concerned about privacy, you can disable WEA in your Android Settings under Safety & emergency or Emergency alerts.
