But the thought that the previous version of these characters are what has drawn so many people to these characters, KNOWING DAMN WELL that this was never what i wanted them to look like kinda messes with my head?
Not necessarily in a negative way, just generally it feels odd to me
Maybe it's because now i have the foresight and know just how much MORE they can be than what most people were offered by me throughout the years
But idk
Just to be clear im not necessarily calling them bad (even if by my standards they very much are) because i KNOW that might upset people as me wanting it or not, that's what most people are attached to
It's OK if you like them! Im GLAD that so many people like them and are therefore attached to them!
It's just, I'm kinda upset that it took me this long to realise what i wanted from their designs and I'm happy that i finally got there

| 9 | I guess a little character design/art progress rant
I feel like i haven't really been "good" at character design until now
And i know a lot of people are going to agree but what considering constitutes in my brain as "good character design" a lot of my older designs, especially regarding my main ocs feel underwhelming to me
Like i look at what their designs are supposed to look like before i took a break from drawing ENTR0PY and am so immensely disappointed
Because i so CLEARLY can see what i was going for but i lacked the skills and the congestive ability to express what i wanted to out of these guys
To be more precise what i needed them to represent
To me a good character design, aside from all that makes one great like shape language and color balance and contrast and what have you, is a design that can first and formost communicate what the character is supposed to be
Or rather what the author wants you to think that they are supposed to be
And these designs JUST aren't that
And there's a lot i can blame this on like my lack of visual library when it comes to the aesthetic i wanna portray in this story or my general lack of some character designing skills like blanced and contrasting shapes and silhouettes...
But i think most importantly it's the fact that, having myself be so emotionally attached to these characters, i was marrying myself to the idea i had in my head of their "identity" which meant i was depriving myself of the permission to experiment further if that makes sense | 17 |
