People often ask where the name of the AZOV unit came from. It is very simple - in 2014, Ukrainian volunteer formations were named by geographical area.
For example: Donbas, Aidar, Dnipro-1 and others. The AZOV battalion was also named according to this principle.
AZOV (originally called Azovia in the documents) is a designation of a geographical area in the East of Ukraine, near the coast of the Azov Sea. The AZOV unit itself was stationed near Mariupol, so the name was quite organic.
It is customary to write the word AZOV in capital letters - as a separate concept. This word in Ukraine has the symbolism of a separate nationalist brand. AZOV fighters, AZOV volunteers, AZOV movement - all of these terms mean that these people are related to the AZOV regiment.

+5Last night, AZOV held its annual mystery called "Day of the Dead". It was attended by representatives of various units founded by veterans of the AZOV regiment, from the special unit KRAKEN to the SOF AZOV, as well as fighters from Azostal released from Russian captivity.
Our correspondents were present at the scene. The command lined up several thousand fighters with torches. They recited the Ukrainian Nationalist Prayer and remembered the AZOV Forces' fallen. As the culmination of the mystery, a huge wooden drakkar was burned, so symbolically the souls of the fallen fighters went to Valhalla, a paradise for those who defend their native land from enemies with weapons in their hands.
Such rituals are unique to the Ukrainian Armed Forces and are held only by AZOV.
