“Seasons” where did this concept come from? How did it emerge?

Machine Accountability
“how can a human decision-maker be held accountable for decisions that occur faster and with a larger number of inputs than they can physiologically comprehend and react to…
how can a human decision maker be held accountable for decisions made by an intelligent agent program that depend on adaption through inscrutable learning techniques – for example, neural networks and machine learning – that in complex decision-making environments alter how the intelligent agent program acts from one instance to another?…
However, for all its autonomy and adaptivity, the intelligent agent does not have any subjective purpose or marginal utility that it seeks to fulfill or maximize. Rather, it always only optimizes – and does so without any human sense of deliberation regarding the consequences of its actions.”

Community Design to Build Better Communities
By our very own member @mashalw — an excellent exploration on community engagement, health, monitoring, and development.

Platform Lock-In
One of the tactics used by businesses is to commoditise features that other organizations competing with them offer. Communities will likely do the same:

Autonomous Worlds
Question: Do we think autonomous worlds are a different concept than community as media?

Cyberspace. A world where no bodies live.
“Cyberspace consists of transactions, relationships, and thought itself, arrayed like a standing wave in the web of our communications. Ours is a world that is both everywhere and nowhere, but it is not where bodies live.”

Curation Pass:
Happy Monday! If you have not paid for a membership, I *highly suggest* you mint this token, it’s Free and L2. If you need help or pocket change for gas, DM me. This curation feed will become token gated in a few months 😘

Conversational Programming, and the need for Maps, not just code.
“
design is the process of a conversation between two or more pespectives in the minds of one or more designers. In today's case, one of the designers is becoming the machine. That conversation is the heart of conversational programming. But, what we're missing is the graphical conversational part of what is needed.”

Fourth Generation Warfare:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth-generation_warfare
“Preference falsification is an information theory term for the tendency for people to express a public preference that is different from their private, interior preference. For various reasons, certain preferences may not be publicly acceptable to express; they may be punished by execution, or labor camps, or exile, or social exclusion, or at the very least suspicion and a risk of some of these things.”

Hello all,
Just a note that we’ve tentatively confirmed two authors to commission for writing on Folklore. Funds from the membership, as promised, will be used to pay an upfront payment and Writing NFT sales will be split between the Folklore treasury and the author.
Once these two essays are published, and shared on socials, we will “close Season 1” and sell memberships for “Season 2” — I expect this to be in July at the latest. Aligning well with our 1-year anniversary coming up in August! 😃
PAID MEMBERSHIP UPDATE
(1) Folks who bought the mid-season pass will be grandfathered into Season 2.
(2) Original holders will have the option to buy Season 2 at a discount (0.03 ETH), and
(3) Badge holders rewarded for contributions will have the lowest membership cost (0.01 ETH).
(4) Net new members will have a cost of 0.05 ETH.
Lastly, we will continue to cap paid membership to the first 150 buyers, as we did at Folklore's original launch. If sold out, we will do a mid-season pass again for an extra 50 spots, price increase TBD.
FREE TOKEN FOR CHANNEL
If you are not a member but would like to continue participating in this feed, please collect this free token by June 30th 2023. It is on optimism so gas is super cheap. Once Season 2 begins, anyone without a token will be removed from this DRIP - we are very grateful you’ve joined us for the year and hope you come back when you’re ready.
The continued paid membership each season will ensure participants are continuously rewarded and people who are not active or interested are cycled out — ensuring high quality readers for our high quality content 😉. As of the moment, there will be no automatic subscriptions. It is encouraged that you actively choose to pay the membership when you are ready.
QUESTIONS
If you have any questions, feel free to DM me on Telegram or Twitter. More things coming in Season 2! (Onchain memory? Folklore custom GPT chatbot? Profile Pics? More writing!)
If you’ve never gotten a token before, no fear, just let me know and we can do a quick onboarding process.
THANK YOU
Thank you all again for participating in this grand experiment, as we work towards building our very own Perpetual Media Machine.
PS. If you’re worried about gas let me know and we can send you a membership on Optimism.
Computational Law.
Lee Loevinger captured the irony of this situation in an article written in 1949: "It is one of the greatest anomalies of modern times that the law, which exists as a public guide to conduct, has become such a recondite mystery that is incomprehensible to the public and scarcely intelligible to its own votaries."

Thin Rules, Thick Rules. Why do we follow them?
This article is a great deep dive into rule making, and most importantly, our natural tendencies to OBEY.

Hi Everyone,
We will be pushing back making this channel token-gated because gas is extremely expensive right now, so expensive that it would be cheaper to buy a full membership on Optimism instead of a free token on mainnet.
I’ll create the same free badge on Optimism so you don’t need to pay any exorbitant gas fees to do the transaction. Thanks for understanding!
Acceleration.
“In early modernity – roughly until 1800 – social change was ‘intergenerational’: social structures did change, but only over the course of multiple generations, making it nearly imperceptible in the lifespan of an individual.”

Surveillance. How new monitoring technology may actually be decreasing the efficacy of shipping — while imposing new burdens on an already burnt-out worker base.

Child Data. It might be illegal to track children and digitise them online… but not so much at a theme park.

Platform Capture and its Consequences
“Peretti wrote that he as the [Buzzfeed] C.E.O. was to blame for being “slow to accept that the big platforms wouldn’t provide the distribution or financial support required to support premium, free journalism purpose-built for social media.” In other words, Facebook wasn’t going to make external content production profitable; why would it, when it had so many users willing to fill its feed for free and fuel the platform’s own advertising sales in turn?”
