"What can't be done any other way is selling your right to vote or buying it from someone else. Similarly to how online catalyzed interest of the new, and “the web” showcased how the internet can be built into something completely bigger and useful than what was originally imagined, the notion of blockchains as a vehicle for digital objects will shepherd this new wave of utilities that over time, because obvious as they become a part of what we do."

Token commerce. Today I’ve got a “mainstream” article about tokens and their possibilities. If you’ve spent any time with me (Rafa) in person, you’ve probably ended talking about disposable NFTs: what happens when everything we do is tokenised? An atomisation of every action, and every piece of infrastructure. In this article, Packy explored some of these themes and speculates what could come next (from the POV of last year!)

Kudos to Fynn for sharing this article.

“Folkbildningsrörelsen: that is the name we have for this movement of self-organized study groups, resource centers, maker spaces, public lectures, and free retreats for personal development.
These types of things exist in other countries too – but not at the same scale. Or even close.”

“The “middle class” of creators are missing. It’s part of a larger thesis in how the web completely changed how status games got played around culture.
And frankly, I don’t know how to solve this problem? Should it be solved even? I think we’re still better off having a longer long tail at cost of bigger big creators. But, can it be better? One solution that reappears is to go back to reinvigorating local communities alongside algorithm. Move away from mostly online, platform-mediated relationships, and back more to human-curated, personal communities. Alongside all the discussion on why depression and suicide rose among teenagers, maybe we’ll come to see the algorithmic age as the smoking of this generation.”

What is the Folklore master plan?
Curate-Connect-Create
Welcome to all the new joiners from the past few weeks. As you know, Folklore is an emerging “DAMN” (decentralised autonomous media network). It all starts with peer-to-peer connection, trust, and high quality content. But how do we build together? What does this look like in practice?

What is a protocol? How do protocols differ from adjacent concepts such as standards, APIs, and social conventions?
In this magnum opus, Venkat and the Ethereum community explore this core question.

Back in 2016, Kyle Chayka wrote about the Silicon Valley aesthetic. Now? This is coming to an end. It is apparent with the advent of "Goblin Mode" and the pandemic, that this minimalist clean aesthetic is no longer aligned to the zeitgeist of our times. What comes next? My bet: glam is back — however, it will be regionalised based on digital networks, with some communities becoming aesthetic icons.

Hi Everyone,
Over the next 2 months, we will be encouraging all readers of this drip to subscribe with a token (free). If you don’t have a crypto wallet, feel free to let me know and I can help onboard you,,, and I will send you some pocket change to get the free pass as well!
As we continue to grow, this registration process will help us extend our membership beyond those that are paying for additional privileges such as the discussion forum, curation, and commissioning essays.
I’ll send an update later today with a link to the token, and pin it in this channel.
After the 2 months, onboarding will require the token and the Mirror newsletter will become the fully free and public interface.
What’s coming next in the creator economy? First, we need to understand influencers today:

“it is harder to interpret what we see online as a lossy compression, and more tempting to accept it as the world itself”

Culture and taste take center stage in the design of new online economies. Today we have two short entries, one is a product announcement from Substack, and the other from Dirts recent newsletter:

Hi Everyone,
A huge congratulations to @flobsien for being the first author on Folklore. In the article, Finn explores crypto's vallues, morality and structure as a religion — and what it means for those that participate in it. We're very proud to be supporting their work and look forward to publishing more content from Folklore members.

As a follow-up from yesterday’s Nemesis piece, we will now read “what actually happened” — Max Pain
“The volatility of the past two years has created a landscape that demands an increasingly sophisticated consumer, one capable of managing to risk in an environment where it is almost impossible to do so. This Mass Sophistication means regular people are smarter and more based than ever.
When everyone gets smarter, things get harder. If everyone is reassessing the most-effective-tactics-available all the time, it gets harder and harder to win, even though you’re smarter and “should be in a better position…
Ultimately, it is only those who control the flows of information and capital —social media platforms, market makers, exchanges—that are able to profit systematically.”

Today and tomorrow we will take a look at Nemesis’ thesis of ‘umami’ — the first essay and the follow up.
Part 1 /////////
“Advanced consumers” became obsessed with umami and then ran around trying to collect ever-more-intensifying experiences of it. Things were getting more and more delicious, more and more expensive, and all the while, more and more immaterial.
Umami is what you got when you didn’t get anything.

Today we will talk about “THE DIET” — or how to manage the torrent of information that online life has enabled.
“You need some information diet input from ALL levels to work at ANY level… It's not addictive FOMOing that kills you, but not being able to translate the information consumption/production choices you're making into winning bets.”
“It's the information firehose itself that's creating this environment not evil designers.”

“We get what we need close by, and we travel far for what we want”
In this Podcast we hear from the founders of Shopify and what it means to nurture small-medium size businesses. In particular, it’s insightful to hear about how banks are one of the major reasons SMBs have difficulty getting fund.
