BECOMING CHARTERED WITH A NON-ACCOUNTING BACKGROUND How to become chartered from a non-accounting background in simple steps If you find the world of Accounting intriguing and are interested in a career change, you will need to become certified to be worth your salt as an accountant in Nigeria and the world at large. Whilst getting certified is the most major thing you need to do, for someone who doesn't have a background in Accounting, there are some things you'd need to do to start your Chartered Accountancy journey in Nigeria, they are: Can I become chartered from a non-accounting background or field? Yes you can, by going through the following steps. • Meet the educational requirements: For ICAN you will need to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree from any university or a Higher National Diploma of any Polytechnic accredited by the council in any field. While for ACCA, you will need to have two A levels and three GCSEs in five separate subjects including English and Maths, or 2 passes at GCE A level and 3 passes at SSCE/GCE O level, or Diploma/Ordinary National Diploma or Nigeria Certification in Education (NCE) or bachelor’s degree from any recognized university in any field. Your degree doesn't have to be business or accountancy related. • Register as a Professional Student and for the Exam: Once you have met the educational requirements, the next thing is to register with these bodies as a professional student and for the exam. You should familiarize yourself with their website to get up-to-date information on the registration fees, exam fees, exemption fees, documents required, and the process.
