If you havent noticed yet, theres been a long-running cultural trend sponsored (directly) by academia that seeks to implant the idea that "Life Back Then" was horribly primitive, backwards, full of disease, starvation, and oppression, and that our Plastic Modern Life is a shining beacon of hope, freedom, enlightenment and a superior quality of life. Nothing could be more intellectually dishonest. We're constantly presented a picture of primitive life being a nightmare of religious torture, plague, and hunger, with short life expectancies and ruthless tyrants, but while all of these surely happened at some point, to imply that entire time periods were characterized solely by these negatives is to intentionally try to muddy history in order to paint a better picture of our absolutely dogshit modern life today. He lived in a close tightknit community of family/friends, all of them like him, sharing his values and views, all of them working together towards the same goal, while your modern bugman lives in a soul-crushing concrete termite mound with 1 million total strangers and no cultural, ethnic, religious harmony to bring them together, nothing in common with one another besides a brainwashed singular drive to buy more plastic shit. The average 1700s naval conscript was forced into a life of hardship, and he STILL ate better than the average modern westerner living in an era of "enlightenment." I bet you that sailor, despite living a life of danger, hard labor, and brutal discipline, didnt suffer a ton of bullshit mental neuroses like the average westerner, addicted to depression pills and therapy to cope with his meaningless existence. Dont fall for the gaslighting. "Modernity is better because we... uh, we have... doctors and videogames!" are just propaganda meant to get you to think of your shitty unnatural miserably depressive modern existence as a gift not a curse. Theyre trying to piss on you and make you grateful for "rain."
