Most important information regarding IISC
IISc offers a Mtech degree in Mechanical Engineering not specifically in Design or thermal or any other domain. In IISc it is mandatory to do all core subjects in first semester and second semester and parallely we can take other subjects depending on the interest where we want to channelise our degree for ex in Design domain or in thermal domain. We are able to chose our guide and their projects in second semester and on the basis of which our futher choice of subjects differs for example my profile is completely in thermal domain. So it is different from IITs and other colleges that you dont need to choose your domain during admission you can work your way out and chose on the basis of interest after doing all core subjects.

Importance of GATE XE
Regarding IIT's
if your XE rank is good then you can apply in
1)IIT MADRAS, Bombay - Mechanical, Aerospace, Applied Mechanics
2)IIT Delhi - Applied Mechanics
3)IISC -Aerospace
From placement perspective Opportunity for Manufacturing branch in core sector is limited
And don't join IIT in any interdisciplinary branch since the companies for those branches are limited
If your GATE ME rank is good and if your primary aim is placement choose IIT Bombay Over IISC Banglore
MS placement in IIT Madras is very good so apply for MS program also (in Design and Thermal only)
For IIT/IISC interviews keep the fundamentals very clear
Regarding Rank : In my time I had a XE rank of 35 still I couldn't get IIT Bombay Thermal
NIT Trichy, Karnataka and Warangal have good placement stats for core branches
If you are from Mechanical Background join Mechanical, Applied Mechanics and Aerospace branch only (either MS or MTech)

For Interview point of View of IIT's & IISc. Make sure you revised Mathematics...
Specially the
1.Graph Theory (of 12th Standard)
2.Calculus
3. Linear Algebra & Matrix 4. Complex Numbers.
No matter which department you belongs if you are appearing for IIT's interview they are going to ask something about mathematics and Applied Mathematics and specially the mathematics which requires in Heat Transfer & Fluid Mechanics equations.
