16 Lieutenant General Theodoros Pangalos, born on January 11, 1878 on the island of Salamis and died on February 26, 1952 in Athens, is an emblematic figure in Greek military and political history. Born of a noble lineage on the island of Kea and descended from an Arvanite fighter in the Greek Revolution, Pangalos distinguished himself as early as his studies at the Greek Military Academy, graduating at the top of his class in 1900. Continuing his training in Paris, he acquired an expertise that would serve him well throughout his career.
During the Balkan Wars, Pangalos proved himself a competent staff officer, and his support for Eleftherios Venizelos' party against King Constantine earned him an important appointment to the War Ministry. His participation in the Asia Minor campaign and his role in the overthrow of King Constantine I in 1922 reinforced his profile as a nationalist and reformist leader.
As a fervent advocate of army modernization, he successfully reorganized the armed forces in Macedonia and Thrace, contributing to the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne. His opposition to the treaty won him great popularity and marked the beginning of his political rise.
On June 24, 1925, Pangalos seized power in a coup, abolishing the fledgling republic and establishing a constitutional dictatorship. As dictator, he implemented bold and controversial reforms, notably in civil liberties and social legislation. Elected president in April 1926, his term was marked by authoritarian policies, but also by a desire to modernize and centralize power.

17 Nikolaos Plastiras, nicknamed the “Black Knight” for his daring and leadership during the Greco-Turkish War, is an emblematic figure in Greek history. Born on November 4, 1881 in Karditsa, Greece, he grew up in a family with deep roots in the mountainous Agrafa region, known for its spirit of resistance against Ottoman occupation.
His military career was marked by acts of bravery and daring tactics, notably during the Asia Minor campaigns of 1920 to 1922, where he played a key role in securing the abdication of King Constantine I in September 1922. After exile in France following the Restoration of 1935, he returned to Greece to fight against ELAS in December 1944.
Plastiras was not only a distinguished military man, but also an influential politician, having served three times as Prime Minister of Greece. He worked for the well-being of his country, implementing economic and social policies. His dedication to Greece and his legacy as a courageous leader and reformer remain etched in the national memory.
He died on July 26, 1953 in Athens, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service to the Greek nation. His life is a testament to his unwavering commitment to his country, both on the battlefield and in government, making him a true national hero. | 1 192 | 6 | Loading... |
