There was the prophecy of the coming Jewish messiah: some Jews believed it when Jesus taught in synagogues, others (like the Pharisees) did not, and called him a blasphemer and a false messiah; so, in the end, those who were not convinced remained with orthodox Judaism while many adopted the new movement within Judaism, Christianity.
