Free Buddhism Dharma teachings podcasts and videos The Ten Bhumis: The Sanity of Earth and the Second Bhumi By Mahamudra Master Chogyam Trungpa Rocky Mountain Dharma Center (RMDC), Red Feather Lakes, Colorado, USA On the second bhumi, stainless (vimala in Sanskrit), involving the discipline (shila) paramita. The importance of friendship towards oneself on the bodhisattva path. Basis of second bhumi is relating to the physical world we experience with our senses. The world of form and our daily functional tasks as the source of discipline and also what we apply it to. This transcendental discipline naturally evolves from generosity of first bhumi, because one is open and can afford to be pure. Primordial purity contains an inherent respect for the earth. Conduct of bodhisattva at this stage is deliberate, spacious action, and working with others instead of trying to convert them. Free Buddha Dharma ebook A Guide to Shamatha and Vipashyana Meditation By Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche This short book gives a clear and concise overview of how to do basic sitting meditation. Thrangu Rinpoche spent over 40 years teaching meditation and other Buddhist topics to both Western and Asian students. In this book Rinpoche explains meditation in a simple, non-technical language based on a tradition that is over 1,000-year-old that has produced many enlightened individuals. The process of developing good meditation begins with Shamatha meditation which is to settle the mind and to gradually train it so that we can rest without becoming overly distracted by thoughts and emotions. The second step to developing good meditation is Vipashyana which is to learn how to look directly at the mind and see its true nature. When we are able to do this, we can begin to reduce our disturbing emotions and thoughts and anxieties. Both of these meditations can be done anywhere without any special settings, implements, or empowerments. Shamatha and Vipashyana can be practiced in sitting meditation and also in the daily activities such as working, commuting, eating, explaining things. In other words, the meditation explained by Rinpoche is very useful to the modern practitioner who is very busy with family and work. Free Buddha dharma ebook Peace From Within By Ajahn Kalyano (Sr) On the occasion of my 60th birthday, I received some requests from the monastic Sangha and the lay supporters of Buddha Bodhivana Monastery who wished to know more about my life and practice as a monk. In response, it seems like a good idea to commit some of my various recollections to paper before they become lost through the passage of time. This book includes some of my personal recollections and insights from my life in the robes, rather than providing lengthy explanations of the Buddha’s teachings. The language used is simple and without too much reference to many of the Pali technical terms that we use daily as we talk about the Buddha’s teachings. Free Buddhism Dharma teachings podcasts and videos The Ten Bhumis: Heroism and the First Bhumi By Mahamudra Master Chogyam Trungpa Rocky Mountain Dharma Center (RMDC), Red Feather Lakes, Colorado, USA In-depth talk on the bodhisattva path, through the five paths and first bhumi. Bodhisattva as "path of heroism," arising from embracing aloneness. Contrasts ideas of heroism in Eastern and Western civilizations. True heroism as not fighting against something, but taking delight in seeing how aloneness brings nothing to lose. Picks up discussion of five paths: path of accumulation, path of unification, path of joy, path of insight, path of meditation. Path of insight corresponds with first bhumi. Defines "bhumi" as "earth level," sanity of being fully synchronized with body and mind. First is "bhumi of delight," "joy," having realized that you have something to offer. Discusses connection between first bhumi and prajna, which cuts root of karma. In Q&A, clarifies definitions of heroism; bodhisattva manifests generosity through "being"; what happens to neurosis in first bhumi. How entering path of bhumis makes one "a living person," connected with earth. Free Buddha Dharma ebook A Supplication to Vajra Body, Speech, and Mind ༄༅། །རྡོ་རྗེ་སྐུ་གསུང་ཐུགས་ལ་གསོལ་འདེབས། By Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo This is a four-line devotional composition addressed to the guru and focused on invoking auspiciousness—a popular type of Tibetan Buddhist prayer. It highlights the qualities of the enlightened body, speech, and mind of the buddhas and lineage lamas, while also seeking their blessings to embody these qualities. Since the text was originally untitled and is also not mentioned in the Tibetan catalog, the title of this work has been generated by Khyentse Vision Project for cataloging purposes and is based on naming conventions used in the original index for similar untitled works. Free Buddha Dharma ebook The Role of Water in Religion By Bhante Shravasti Dhammika What is it about water that has captured our fascination from the time our earliest ancestors first dipped their hands is a flowing stream or felt drops of cooling rain on their skin? Our familiarity with water has made us dull to its amazing and mysterious nature. We bathe in it every day, drink it, cultivate our food with it, get food from it, and then cook that food in it. Water is transparent and yet we can observe our reflection in it or see the sparkle of the sun on its ripples. Despite its soft and yielding nature it can patiently ware pebbles smooth and shape rocky river-beds. When still it is silent but when it tumbles over cliffs or crashes onto sea shores its roar can be heard for miles. Responding to the environment around it, water can become clear solid ice, white powdery snow, opaque steam, grey thunder clouds, an azure ocean and even vapour invisible to the eye. Water washes away filth but then effortlessly returns to its pure state. Lifeless itself water gives life. It is not surprising therefore that humans have associated water not just with life but also with the origins of life.
