NEW PUBLICATION ALERT 📢 I’m delighted to announce that my research has been published in Global Heritage. The study is sponsored by CODESRIA through the 2025 African Fellowships for Research in Indigenous and Alternative Knowledges (AFRIAK), implemented in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. This study centres on the academic and policy rejuvenation of Ihyumbe (reciprocal group labour farming system) and Kwav (age-grade group), known among the Tiv people as age-long traditional (strategic) instruments for cultural heritage protection and socio-economic development. The author appreciates all the colleagues who made comments to enrich the work during the first national conference of the College of Postgraduate Studies, Federal University Lokoja. All the mentors at the Institute of African Cultural Heritage Science, Gulu University, Uganda, and all oral informants and knowledge holders who participated in the study are also greatly appreciated. An Indian professor visited Russia to study its education system. During his visit, he came across something that left him completely puzzled. In Russia, the highest score in an exam was 5. That was understandable. But what shocked him was this: Even a completely blank answer sheet received 2 marks. A blank paper. Two marks. The professor could not believe it. Surely, a student who writes nothing deserves zero? The question stayed in his mind until he finally asked a senior Russian educator. "How can you give marks to someone who has written absolutely nothing?" The educator smiled. Then he gave an answer the professor never forgot. "Zero means non-existence. As long as a student is standing in front of me, how can I call him zero?" The professor was silent. The educator continued. "Perhaps that child woke up before sunrise." "Perhaps he travelled through snow and freezing weather." "Perhaps he studied but became nervous." "Perhaps he tried and failed." "But how can one bad day erase all the effort that brought him here?" Then he said something even more powerful. "A teacher's job is not to convince a child that he is nothing. A teacher's job is to help him believe he can stand up and try again." The professor later admitted that this conversation changed the way he looked at education. And perhaps it changes the way we should look at people too. How quickly we give labels. Failure. Average. Not good enough. Finished. But a person is never equal to one result. One exam cannot measure a life. One mistake cannot define a future. One bad chapter cannot decide the entire story. Some of the most successful people in the world have failed interviews, lost businesses, repeated exams, and faced rejection after rejection. What kept them moving was not talent alone. It was hope. And sometimes all a person needs is someone who refuses to give up on them. The next time you see someone struggling, remember this Russian teacher. Instead of asking, "Why did you fail?" Perhaps ask, "How can I help you try again?" Because people grow best not when they are judged, but when they are encouraged.

NIGERIA IS STILL TEACHING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT NO LONGER EXISTS By: Godson Akinsanya A child starting Primary 1 today may not enter the workforce until around 2040. Yet many of our classrooms are still preparing children for the economy of the 1980s. We still place too much emphasis on memorising notes, passing exams and reproducing what the teacher said. But the world has changed. The child of today will grow into a world shaped by artificial intelligence, automation, renewable energy, biotechnology, digital finance and global competition. So why are we still teaching as though all they need is a certificate? Nigeria’s education system needs more than another small adjustment. It needs a complete rethink. At primary school, children should still learn strong reading, writing and mathematics. But they should also begin learning digital skills, basic financial literacy, gardening, first aid, public speaking and simple problem-solving. Junior secondary school, students should be introduced to coding, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, debate, critical thinking, environmental awareness and practical life skills. At senior secondary level, we should stop forcing every child into the old Science, Arts or Commercial boxes. Students should be able to follow proper career pathways such as: * Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science * Engineering and Manufacturing * Healthcare and Biotechnology * Business and Global Finance * Modern Agriculture and Food Processing * Film, Animation and Digital Media * Law, Governance and Public Policy Before leaving secondary school, every Nigerian student should have more than WAEC or NECO results. They should leave with a recognised digital skill, practical project experience, confidence in public speaking, some exposure to work or apprenticeship, and either a business idea or portfolio showing what they can actually do. We must also change how students are assessed. Not everything should depend on one final examination. Let students build projects. Let them solve real problems. Let them work in teams. Let them spend time in workshops, farms, laboratories, offices and industries. Nigeria cannot keep producing graduates who know how to pass exams but do not know how to create value. The purpose of education should not be to produce millions of young people waiting for government jobs. It should be to raise problem-solvers, builders, innovators and employers. A nation cannot become prosperous with an education system that belongs to the past. The child entering school today will live in the future. Our curriculum must get there before they do.
