Second we have Thomas Nast - a German Protestant. He is the "Father of the American Cartoon", creator of the GOP elephant symbol & the modernized Santa Clause - also responsible for pretty much all the anti-Irish cartoons in the U.S during the 1860s onwards Now, why did Nast dislike the Irish? 1) He was bullied by Irish kids when he was younger 2) He thought the Irish were mean to black people 3) He saw the Irish lynch black people during the 1863 New York Draft Riots and burn a Coloured Orphan Asylum to the ground This experience led him to see the Irish as “brutish thugs” and symbols of “mob violence”. This is why he was anti-Irish and is the basis for nearly all of those anti-Irish cartoons you see. He was also Pro-Chinese Immigration - to which Irishman Denis Kearney & all Irish migrants campaigned against. If you see 4th image, his cartoon is implying the Irish are being mean/racist to the Chinese immigrants. He also opposed racial segregation, supported American Indians and was an abolitionist.
