Categories of Tāghūt - Although Tawāgheet are many in number, they all fall into one of three categories. Sulaiman Ibn Sahman says,: “Tāghūt are of three types: 1 - Tāghūt Hukm (judge), 2 - Tāghūt Ibādah (worship), 3 - Tāghūt Ta’ah (obedience) and Mutaaba’ah (follower).” See Ad-Durar al-Saniyya (8/272) Imam Ibn al-Qayyim says, “Tāghūt is everyone who exceeded his limits (whether he is) worshipped, followed or obeyed. Thus, the Tāghūt of any people is the one who they make as a judge besides Allah and His Prophet; that which they worship besides Allah and that which they follow or devote themselves to without the guidance from Allah. These are Tawāgheet of the world and if one were to cast his eye upon mankind, he would discover that the vast majority of them frequently worship illegitimate authorities, seek judgement from them and obey them instead of following the commands of Allah (and that which His Messenger preached).” See I’lam al-Mu-qi’een (1/50)

This saying truly made me reflect deeply. Al-Bayhaqi narrates in Shu’ab al-Iman from Ishaq ibn Khalaf, who said: "Nothing breaks the back of Iblis more than a son of Adam saying, 'I wonder how my fate will end.' At that point, Iblis despairs and says, 'When will this one become vain about his deeds?'" Why does this break the back of Iblis? Because Iblis knows that vanity leads to arrogance, and arrogance leads to the Fire. This is why, dear brothers and sisters, we should always remain humble, attributing any good to Allah, not to ourselves.
