The line graph gives information about visitors coming to the United Kingdom for various purposes over a ten-year period (1989-2009) Units are measured in millions. Overall, in spite of some fluctuations, the primary reason for visiting the UK was for leisure purposes throughout the period given. Meanwhile, almost similar patterns were seen in the number of people who came to the UK as a matter of business or to see family and friends. Interestingly, in 2004 there was virtually no disparity in the number of people visited. The figure for people visiting the UK to take a holiday exceeded 6 million and it reached its peak at about 9 million in 1999, which was then followed by a sharp decline to just below 8 million in 2004. Notably, in that year there was almost no gap in visitors numbers among different categories. By 2009 the figure for holidaymakers visiting the UK increased to around 9 million, approaching the highest figure reached in 2004. The least common reasons for visiting the UK was for business and to visit family and friends. The figure for both made up 4 million in 1993 despite a significant initial disparity in visitors number (at about 5.5 and 3.8 million in turn ) .
