Wrapping Up an Inspiring Event: โPlay-Based Pedagogy: Advocating for Every Childโ at Jigjiga Universityโs East African Child Development Research Institute!
This inspiring event, co-organized with International Rescue Committee, Unicef Ethiopia, Save the Children in Ethiopia, and USAID Ethiopia, brought together researchers, educators, and advocates all passionate about the power of play in education.
It's clear that we all share a commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to unlock their potential through play.

On May 31st, 2024, a high-level discussion on university partnership and collaboration took place in Kampala, Uganda. Dr. Beshir Abdullahi from Jigjiga University, Dr. Mohamed Osman from Samara University, and Prof. Umar Kakuma from Makerere University, convened at Makerere University's main campus to explore potential partnerships.
The meeting centered on Academic Exchange Programs, Research Collaboration, Capacity Building, Industry Partnerships, Joint Program Development, Staff Development, and Student Mobility.
Makerere University, Uganda's largest and one of East Africa's oldest and leading universities, is at the forefront of this tripartite agreement. The collaboration will focus on joint research and teaching initiatives, along with the exchange of staff and graduate student scholarship opportunities.

Jigjiga Universityโs Institute of Health Sciences Department heads and exam committee members commenced today a training on; โComputer-Based Testing Exam administration and post exam analysis.โ
The training was organized by Jigjiga University, Health Science Education Development Center (HSEDC).
Dr. Ahmed Hassen, HSEDC Director stated that the objective of the training is to enhance the digital literacy of faculty and academic leaders to transition from paper-and-pen exams to computer-based testing. This is an important step in institutionalizing CBT as a sustainable assessment method across the institute.
By working together, the institute can successfully implement CBT and ensure its long-term success as part of the overall quality improvement initiatives.

Dr. Muluken Nigatu, CEO of Teachers and Education Leaders Development at MoE, joined online, praising the conference as a valuable platform for dialogue among educators, researchers, and policymakers. He expressed gratitude to Jigjiga University's East African Child Development Research Institute for organizing this timely event.
Professor Belay Tefera from AAU emphasized that effective learning through play dispels misconceptions, illuminates dark sides, silences disablers, and empowers enablers.
Mr. Abdilahi Elmi, Director of the East African Child Development Research Institute, facilitated the session, encouraging active discussions, questions, and experience sharing.
Special guests, including Dr. Fekedes, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Kotobe University of Education, and representatives from IRC, UNICEF, USAID, and Save the Children, attended alongside the Jigjiga University community.

Elyas Abdulahi, Ph.D., Vice President for Research, Technology Transfer and Community Service, welcomed the participants, emphasizing the transformative power of play in a childโs life. He highlighted that play is a powerful vehicle for learning, development, and psychosocial wellbeing.
Mr. Abdulahi Abdi, Head of the Somali Regional Education Bureau, opened the conference by critiquing traditional education methods that prioritize rote memorization over play.
