Hey guys there is a question that we mentioned in the last lecture that might come in the exam which is
What is the difference between the images of light and dark in “she walks in beauty” and the images of light and dark in “To Hope” with references from the poems.
Q1_
1_ A_ The author has mixed....
2_ A_ Far Asia
3_ D_ None of that
Q2_ In his poem “Frost at Midnight” Coleridge states that Nature is the “enteral language” of God, because God communicates with humans through Nature. According to Coleridge the frost “performs a secret mission” meaning that the frost has a holy mission, and that mission is to communicate with humans. In the poem Coleridge highlights that Nature plays the role of the teacher in the life of the individual. Nature teaches humans things about life and the human experience. Therefore, a person that grows up in nature will understand the language of God, and by understanding the language of God humans will humans will enjoy every season and God will mould the human spirit “mould thy spirit ”. Here also we have Jean Jaques Rousseau's of the noble savage.
Q3_ In Shelly's “Ode to the west wind” the wind acts both as a destroyer and a preserver. The wind has the power to destruct and construct. The wind in Autumn carry the leaves from the branches of the trees and lay them cold on the ground “driven like a ghost from an enchanter fleeing”. In contrast the wind in spring come with ease and fresh breeze, scattering nice odors and sweet buds which is an act of construction. In the poem, shelly uses the power of the wind as a symbol of change and rebirth, and he connects it to the role of the poet. The role of the poet according to shelly is a role of a social spokesman. The poet has the power to change with his words things in society like social ills, such as corruption, inequality and exploitation of people just like wind “Ashes and sparks my words among mankind”.
Q1_
A_ William Blake uses many blacksmith images in his poem “The Tyger”, which we can see in the poem in the words ( anvil, hammer, chain and furnace). Blake uses these blacksmith images because of the industrial revolution that characterized England and Europe at that time. But Blake uses these blacksmith images to refer to God, emphasizing that even after all of the progression of the industrial revolution God is still the best blacksmith, creator and artist.
B_ The sublime is the idea of finding beauty in wildness. When an internal feeling meets a grand external view evokes a kind of sensation that astonishes us and gives us the awe feeling. Romantic poets focused on the sublime because it goes beyond reason and allowes them to admire all kinds of beauty.
Q2_
1_ A_ Hill
2_ D_ None of that
3_ C_ Art if art's sake
Q3_ The speaker in Robert Burns's “To a Mouse” shows empathy towards the mouse by saying that the mouse is not alone. The mouse according to the speaker is not alone in proving foresight might go in vain. “The best laid schemes of mice and men oft go awry” is a statement which Burns indicates through that both mice and men create plans that sometimes might be interrupted by an external force. But the difference between the mouse and humans is that the mouse can only thing about the present “only present dangers make thee flee”. While humans look at the past and get stuck there “behind me i see”, and think of the future and get afraid “forward-looking”. The speaker in this last stanza thinks that the mouse is better than humans in the aspect that it thinks only about the present time.
