مقدمه المسرحيه الاولى 🟣The Devil’s Disciple

The Devil's Disciple

The plot diagram of she stoops to conquer * the plot diagram is concerned with events not acts or scenes in the play we have total of 12 event. 1_ The introduction: in the introduction we have 1 event and it is when Mr. Hardcastle told his daughter kate that he has found her a great suitr to be her husband 2_ The rising action and it consists of 7 events 1_ Tony's prank on Marlow and Hastings 2_ Hastings and constance Neville plan to elope 3_ showing how Marlow behaves with lower class people and he falls in love with kate 4_ Mr. Hardcastle getting furious with the impudence of the guests 5_ when Marlow knows that Mr. Hardcastle house is not an inn 6_ Kate asking her father for more time to prove Marlow's good characteristics 7_ Tony trick his mother to help Hastings and constance Neville to elope 3_The climax: it consists of 1 event and it is _ The two fathers security observing the success of Kate's plan ( the screen event ) 4_ the falling action: it consists of 2 events 1_ constance decides to abandon the plan of elopement 2_ when Tony knew that he can claim his inheritance and can be independent 5_ The resolution: it consists of 1 event _ Weddings plans are discussed for the two couples.

2nd epilogue Tony Lumpkin The second epilogue is spoken by an actor in the character of Tony Lumpkin * the epilogue talks about Tony's life after the end of the play he marries bett bouncer and moves to the city and he spends his time spending his money to appear that he is from an upper class society. He becomes a social climber or also known as pumpkin * This epilogue is s direct satire at social climbers or also called pumpkins

Drama epilogues 1 and 2 * the two epilogues are the final attempt of the author to convince the audience about the new gener. 1st epilogue kate Hardcastle The first epilogue is spoken by an actress in the character of kate hardcastle ( specifically kate the barmaid ) * in this epilogue kate the barmaid describes her life as 5 phases 1_ the first phase: she begins her life shy, nervous and restricted young lady . And she's trying to find work in the country's inn 2_ phase 2: she started to work in an inn and she gained confidence. 3_ phase 3: she moved to the town and started to have a social life and lover and social relations 4_ phase 4: she married someone who is rich and started to wear sophisticated and elegant clothes and living a fashionable life 5_ phase 5: she grew old and started to spend her life playing cards and drinking and have a lot of leisure time ( it ends happily )

The prologue *The prologue was written by David Garrick a friend of Oliver Goldsmith *David Garrick is an actor a good one and also a theater owner * the prologue was spoken by another actor his name was Edward Woodward this actor refused the to play the character of Tony Lumpkin * in the prologue Edward Woodward is wearing all black and holding a handkerchief wiping his tears because he is mourning the comic muse * the main point of the prologue is that laughing comedy is dying and replaced by sentimental comedy * Edward mentions a doctor that is going to save the comic muse, this doctor is Oliver Goldsmith himself and he's going to give the comic muse a 5 draught of potion ( this means 5 Acts ) to heal the comic muse * we have personification 1_ laughing comedy as dying woman 2_ Oliver Goldsmith as a doctor 3_ 5 potions as 5 Acts * after watching the prologue the audience are going to decide if Oliver Goldsmith has succeeded or did he fail * the significance of the prologue 1_ David Garrick wrote it to support his friend Oliver Goldsmith 2_ it tells the audience about the type of comedy that is going to be performed so they don't judge it quickly

Literary background *After Shakespeare sentimental comedy appeared a play that ends with marriage but at the same time it evokes tears and gives moral lesson anti-sentimental comedy or laughing comedy الها اسمين This kind of comedy appeared as a reaction against sentimental comedy because they believed that comedy should not make us cry but only laugh Comedy of manners : makes fun of middle class people Farce : makes fun of mistakes Satire : mocks vanity and hypocrisy The play consists of series of mistakes and misunderstandings

She stoops to conquer by Oliver Goldsmith Historical and literary background Historical: again the theater was closed in this period based on moral and religion reasons by the puritans. * the puritans though that the theater gives indirect messages and it used to make conspiracies against king Charles * So plays were performed only in private houses After that their was flourishing in many aspect of arts music, Drama, opera also agriculture flourished and there was a government that balanced religion and parliament also industry and animal florshied Comedy of manner satirizes middle class people
