He should see violence as a necessary function of living like eating it is a thing which is harmful to deny entirely or to enjoy in excess. The fool thinks the cheek must always be turned or that it is always the time to flip the tables and brandish the whip but wisdom is the understanding of the proper application of force. Organized and structured violence has long been a tool for the maintenance of order among men. When the expectation of violence is completely removed among men order breaks down. “but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” James 3:8 When men are permitted to be reckless with their word without consequence chaos reigns. Where the clenched fist is prohibited entirely femininity among men flourishes. Men need a code, rules, and order. Order is after all what separates men from savages. The primary weakness of the savage against the European was not technology but the lack of order among the savages. Particularly the North American Indians whose war parties were informal, voluntary, and could be abandoned on a whim. Because of this lack of order the Indian could not sustain a prolonged siege or war in most cases, he could not enact complex maneuvers and he was prone to being routed as the body of Indians fought as a mass of individuals and not as a cohesive unit. The highest order of men are those who can develop their own laws and live by them as if their law was written by the indelible ink of God. When men treat their code with the same seriousness they treat the laws of nature they ascend, when discipline fails and order breaks down they become more akin to animals, living not according to a spiritual code but at the whims of their urges and fears. Have a code, live by it, love it more than your own life. Your life after all is ephemeral and fleeting, every breath draws you nearer to death. It is the code by which you live that gives it meaning, it is your faithfulness to it which will echo in eternity.
