Saw some people getting confused b/w Classical languages and Eighth Schedule Languages.
First, both are different.
- Eighth Schedule languages, 22 as of now, are "official languages" of Indian Republic enumerated in the constitution. Meaning these languages are official language of one state or the other, and has significant number of speakers. This category has been in existence since the commencement of constitution and 14 languages, including Marathi, were already there when constitution came in force.
- Classical language as a category was created in 2004 to give recognition to some languages which are ancient, original, historical etc.
So getting Classical tag does not mean getting added in Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

India now has 11 Classical languages.
- Newly added: Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, Pali and Prakrit (5)
- Existing languages: Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Sanskrit and Odia. (6)
- Tamil was the first language to be given classical status in 2004, followed by Sanskrit in 2005.
Bestowing the classical tag grants a language additional promotion, protection, preservation, and the like.@ibrarclasses
