Tips for Health Professionals Who struggle with Academic Language in OET Reading I am using a paragraph from a recent medical writing on depression and insomnia. This is a sample of the level of difficulty you may come across in real tests. Note: This is not from any previous test. Reading Level: Part C It is critical that primary care clinicians dedicate specific diagnostic and treatment attention to the management of both depression (eg, psychotherapy, antidepressants) and insomnia (eg, cognitive behaviour therapy for insomnia administered by trained therapists or psychologists through a mental health treatment plan referral, by online programs, or by a general practitioner or nurse) when they co‐occur. These treatments may be offered concurrently or sequentially (eg, insomnia treatment followed by depression treatment, or vice versa), depending on presenting symptoms, history, lifestyle factors and other comorbidities. (Copyright: Alexander Sweetman et al., 2021 August) Contextual meaning of words It is critical : it is important/ essential/necessary Dedicate : use/devote/give/provide Management : control Co-occur : two health issues appearing /happening at the same time Concurrently : together/ simultaneously Sequentially : one after the other Vice versa : the other way around/ in reverse order Comorbidity : a disease that is simultaneously present with another disease

Many students from the areas of India and Pakistan make errors in both their writing and their speaking due to errors which are historical to the education systems in both countries. This comes from my personal experience of teaching people from both regions, and time spent in the region. Here are some instructions regarding the speaking aspects of the exam. These come from a video from a well-known academy in the region. The sentences from the video are on the left, with the corrections on the right. Today I will discussing...... (Today I will BE discussing/ I will discuss) ...the speaking is not much changed. (the speaking has not changed much) ..a little bit changes are there.... (there are a few changes) the only thing we have to concentrate is.... (the only thing we have to concentrate on) ...we are all aware about... (we are all well aware of) in the old age... (in old age) it is your duty in order to collect the information. (it is your duty to collect the information) (The 1st step is) what should be your reply? (what should your reply be?) ...the providing of the structure.. (is providing the structure) ..is not depending upon the knowledge you are having in your subject. (does not depend upon the knowledge you have in your subject) Be careful when using -ing. There is a big difference in meaning between simple and continuous.

4 top speaking tips from a former OET interlocutor: 1. Avoid using a generic opener like "Hi my name is Blank, and I'm your nurse for today." Take a close look at the SETTING, and use language that is natural to the situation. 2. It's better to use your EARS than your EYES during the 5minutes. Listen to the interlocutor instead of looking at the roleplay card. You'll never go wrong if you address the patient's concerns. 3. It really helps if you know a lot about the medical condition, so do a little bit of research on common topics used in the OET exam. Examples of this are pain assessment, wound care, self-care, and skin conditions. Don't just rely on the task cards; they give limited information. 4. Finally, put the PATIENT FIRST. If there's one thing I learned from all the training, it's that the OET wants professionals to be patient-centered. Genuinely caring about the patient will lead to asking better questions, and to more natural speaking. Good luck, and happy studying! :)

The continue In contrast, OET is crafted specifically for healthcare professionals and tailored to 12 professions. Every part of the test mirrors real-world tasks and scenarios you already encounter in your day-to0-day work, making it familiar, relevant, and practical for studying and applying to your future career. ✅Every part of OET's test content is about healthcare versus IELTS Academic tests' general content Just like IELTS, OET covers four sections – Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. In OET Reading and Listening, the topics are of generic healthcare interest, so all professions do the same tests. OET Speaking and Writing are unique for each profession. So, if you’re a nurse, you will do the nursing tasks, and if you’re a dentist, your tasks will be related to dentistry, and so on. Here’s how OET compares to IELTS Academic on each sub-test: ✅Listening sub-test: OET will assess you on healthcare-related audio examples, such as a discussion between a doctor and patient. IELTS will assess you on audio from academic scenarios, such as a university lecture. ✅Reading sub-test: OET utilises healthcare-related texts such as point-of-care scenarios and workplace communications, whereas IELTS use long-form texts from various academic topics covering everything from recycling to astronomy. ✅Writing sub-test: While sitting OET you'll need to write a letter based on case notes to another healthcare professional. If you sit IELTS you’ll be required to analyse and describe graphs, charts or process diagrams for various academic topics, and write an academic essay on a topic unrelated to healthcare. ✅Speaking sub-test: OET assessment is based on role plays within healthcare settings that are specific to your profession, such as a conversation between a doctor and a patient. IELTS will require you to do speaking assessment with structured conversations on a wide range of academic subjects not related to healthcare. Go where you want to go: OET is accepted by more healthcare organisations globally OET is trusted and recognised by more healthcare organisations around the world as the preferred test for healthcare professionals. This includes the NMC, GMC, AHPRA, ECFMG, CGFNS, and. FMRAC. Organisations like ECFMG, for international medical graduates (IMGs) looking to work in medicine in the United States, only accept OET; other English tests like IELTS are not accepted. Many countries including the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand also accept OET for Visa purposes.
