š What does space smell like?
Weirdly enough, itās not nothingāand astronauts have noticed some surprising scents! š
After spacewalks, astronauts have reported smells like burnt steak, welding fumes, or gunpowder clinging to their spacesuits. But how can a vacuum with no air have a scent?
š Hereās one explanation: Ultraviolet rays from the Sun break up oxygen molecules (O2) near the ISS, creating individual oxygen atoms. These atoms stick to spacesuits and trigger chemical reactions, including ozoneāa gas with a sharp, burnt smell.
š Another explanation? Space itself! Dying stars release molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which smell like charred foodsāthink burnt toast or grilled meat. These PAHs cling to spacesuits, giving astronauts a literal whiff of the universe!
