Visited the Humaid Office today. They are a private robotics lab backed by Akfa Group. We met Abdullajon (a humanoid robot you see in the last picture. He can do a backflip btw). Had an interesting conversation. Exchanged insights on physical intelligence, chinese manufacturing vs the american hardware bubble, egocentric data collection and many more. Had a walk-and-talk with Murod (@aslamov_murod) today. Murod studies electrical engineering at NYUAD. He is building rockets in their rocket lab. We touched on many topics. From the lack of skin in the game in Uzbek startups, through academia-vs-industry debate, to even solving the stage separation problem in rocketry. Below are a few good notes from our conversation that I found worth sharing: 1. Most researchers research the wrong things. Having industry experience is not optional but mandatory, because it equips the scientific mind with real problems that are worth solving. All into academia is not too pragmatic. 2. The Uzbek startup ecosystem suffers from a lack of accountability. Too many government grants remove the financial, social, and emotional consequence of failure. Without "failure" even a possibility, founders never truly commit. Not enough skin in the game. The change stagnates. 3. Great ideas emerge from exposure, not introspection. Finding a solution to an engineering problem requires going through several prior (related and unrelated) prototypes. Essential in engineering, applicable to pretty much anything. Sad didn't track with Strava. Been fun. @husan_thinking

There is something odd about trekking into the wild. You either go all in, or you won’t enjoy the trip. Your subconscious should forget all the worldly deals and focus entirely on the moment as it is, the feeling of immensity when clouds stitch into the peaks, the birds sing into the rhythm of the wind, and the rivers argue endlessly with the rocks. That is the deal the trekking offers. It is not a negotiable one. But I did not hold up my end. My father and I hiked through Kyrgyzstan last weekend. We went to the Lenin base camp, stayed in cottages around Kara-Koi, and visited Sary-Chelek, a valley full of lakes so blue that it looked computer-generated.... continue @husan_thinking

Good writing got people exiled, loved, and remembered. Sometimes all three. Ovid wrote a book in 1 AD called The Art of Love. A guide to attracting people through wit and words alone. It was so effective the Emperor exiled him. That's how dangerous good writing is. Napoleon wrote letters to Josephine from the battlefield. Covered in mud, losing soldiers, and still finding time to write things that kept her reading. He was not handsome. But he knew how to put words together. Cyrano de Bergerac was ugly. Genuinely, historically ugly. Wrote the letters anyway. The woman fell for the words. There's a pattern here. Your crush doesn't want impressive vocabulary. They want to feel like someone actually sees the world in an interesting way. Like there's a real brain behind the screen. Like you're worth knowing. That's what writing teaches you. How to think. How to notice things. How to say something that makes someone stop scrolling. You could take the Agora writing course and learn to write love letters that would make Ovid jealous. Or you could keep sending voice messages. Your choice.

I've been seeing more and more Telegram scams lately. Be extra cautious before pressing random links. They may gain access to your account in some way. And always double-check the username if you get such weird NPC-style messages from your close friends. They may not be them. Someone created a fake account under my name and is sending such messages.
