🇻🇪🇨🇳 Venezuela may stop repaying about $10 billion in debt to China, which was serviced through oil supplies, as a significant portion of Venezuelan crude is now being redirected under American control.
Following the agreement providing the US with access to develop fields amid Venezuela’s colossal reserves, Washington intends to use the oil for its own interests, including replenishing the strategic reserve, while simultaneously reducing the space for previous Chinese schemes.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has already made it clear that Beijing should not count on revenues from new oil production, and Washington’s strategic goal appears to be much broader than a simple energy deal: to bring Venezuela back into the American economic orbit and push China and Russia out of it. The situation is particularly painful for Beijing, as it has been lending to Caracas for years, expecting to recoup its investments with Venezuelan oil, and now risks being left with multibillion‑dollar claims on paper.
