Excessive measles nasal PCR testing is jacking up the case counts. Both LabCorp and Quest are cranking the testing platforms. @PeterMcCulloughMD .

Both outcomes are rare, but because nearly the entire country is MMR vaccinated, there are more vaccine deaths than measles deaths. With modern treatment public health expectation should be zero deaths from the mild infection. @PeterMcCulloughMD .

The U.S. Already Paused This Research Once. Then Quietly Restarted It. From 2014 to 2017 the federal government halted funding for gain-of-function work on influenza, SARS, and MERS — an admission by the government's own reckoning that the risk calculus was unresolved. The pause lifted without the public debate that should have accompanied it. The case for shutting the field down permanently is straightforward: enhancing transmissibility or lethality in a pathogen creates a hazard that doesn't exist otherwise, and the defensive benefit has never been demonstrated to outweigh it.
