Over 20 years, he defended the country's independence, concluded favorable peace treaties, and improved the state's financial situation. In 1672, France and England invaded the Netherlands. The people blamed Johan de Witt for their misfortunes. He lost power, and his brother Cornelis was imprisoned and tortured. On August 20, 1672, Johan de Witt was killed in prison. His body and the body of his brother were mutilated, and parts of their bodies were eaten. This was documented in the painting "The Corpses of the De Witt Brothers" by Jan de Baen. #History
