"Run Before You Walk" Twas a few days ago… My mind was on fire with a new campaign idea that came from my ABBA I always try to act on these ideas as soon as they drop. It’s like a cosmic trade-off: the faster I act, the more high-quality ideas I seem to receive. I had been working it out in my mind, but it was time to stop daydreaming and start doing. It was time to put pen to paper—or fingers to keyboard—and bring this idea to life. The plan? To sell a particular digital product. The product was already available, but there was a hurdle standing in the way: something called a Lead Magnet. For those not in the marketing world, a lead magnet is like the bait on a fishing hook. It’s what I use to attract potential customers. Here’s the catch: the lead magnet wasn’t ready. And let’s be real, it still isn’t. But it’s the most critical piece of the puzzle for this campaign to succeed. As expected, inertia crept in. That sneaky reluctance to just get up and start creating the lead magnet because, well, it’s a lot of work. So, how do I force myself to get it done without wasting precious time? I do something I like to call “Run Before You Walk.” Here’s what it means: you take step 3 before step 1. (And then, you’re forced to go back and take steps 1 and 2.) This is the ultimate antidote to procrastination. Normally, the lead magnet is supposed to be ready before you start promoting anything. But instead? I decided to Run Before I Walk. Here’s how it played out: I instantly contacted my graphic designer to begin working on the flyer for the campaign. I paid him upfront. (Nothing like a little financial commitment to light a fire under you.) The moment the flyer dropped, I quickly created my funnel (a website) to run the campaign. I set everything up within three hours and scheduled the ads to begin the next morning. Now, everything from step 3 to step 7 was ready. Do you think I’ll still procrastinate on steps 1 and 2? I doubt it. Why? Because now, I’ve invested time and money. There’s a sense of compulsion—no, necessity—to get that lead magnet done. This gives you a little perspective on what it means to “Run Before You Walk.” The formula is simple: For any multi-step task you’re procrastinating on, skip step 1 and jump straight to step 3 or beyond. You’ll be forced to circle back and complete step 1 when the pressure’s on. But wait, there’s more! Run Before You Walk has another powerful application: it makes your life easier. For example: If you need to learn how to create websites, don’t wait to “master it” before taking on a client. Take on a client first. You’ll learn more from working with that client (and maybe failing a few times) than you ever would from trying to master everything in theory. If you’re trying to write a book, don’t wait to outline every chapter perfectly. Start writing the middle chapters first. The pressure to fill in the gaps will force you to outline the beginning later. Now, a word of caution: this method isn’t without failure. But here’s the kicker—the failure is the success. The faster you fail, the faster you learn, and the better you become. That said, don’t take unnecessary risks. For example: If you’re trying to learn how to swim, don’t jump into the deep ocean without the necessary skills. (If by some miracle you survive, you’ll realize that any pool is a piece of cake in comparison.) I believe this makes sense.
