DAILY NEWS
📎 The yen weakened to a fresh 38-year trough to the dollar and a record low to the euro on Wednesday, as the currency continued its downward grind, with Japanese officials largely remaining on the sidelines amid the risk of intervention.
The dollar firmed, recouping ground lost on Tuesday, when dovish comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell overshadowed a robust domestic jobs report.
📎 Gold prices rose in Asian trade on Wednesday, seeing some relief as the dollar retreated on some positive comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.
But the yellow metal still remained within a trading range established through most of June, as anticipation of more cues on U.S. interest rates kept traders biased towards the dollar.
The euro remained resilient, helped by a stubbornly high local inflation reading on Tuesday that suggested the European Central Bank would take its time before cutting interest rates again. Sterling was steady ahead of Thursday's UK election.
📎 The dollar slipped on Tuesday in thin, choppy trading after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell struck a moderately dovish tone in his comments, suggesting that the U.S. central bank is more than likely to start its easing cycle later this year.
Powell, in a monetary policy conference in Portugal, said the U.S. economy has made significant progress on inflation as it gets back on the disinflationary path. His remarks were viewed as dovish, analysts said.

📎 The U.S. dollar edged higher in early European trade Tuesday, recovering after recent losses, while the euro dipped ahead of key inflation data.
There are more clues about future Fed monetary policy decisions due this week, starting with Fed Chair Jerome Powell speaking at a European Central Bank conference on today. The minutes of the Fed’s June meeting are due on Wednesday, while nonfarm payrolls data for June are due on Friday, and are set to offer more insight into the labor market - a key consideration for the Fed in cutting interest rates.
📎 Gold prices fell slightly in Asian trade on Tuesday, remaining in a tight trading range as anticipation of a slew of cues on U.S. interest rates kept traders largely averse towards metal markets.
The yellow metal was nursing a fall through June, as fears of high U.S. interest rates pushed up the dollar and Treasury yields. Gold also remained stuck around $2,300 an ounce.
📎 Most Asian currencies weakened slightly on Tuesday as the dollar recovered from recent losses before a barrage of cues on interest rates, while the Japanese yen weakened further into territory last seen 38 years ago.
The Japanese yen continued to lag its Asian peers, with the USDJPY pair, which gauges the number of yen needed to purchase one dollar, up 0.1% at 161.64 yen. The pair hovered around its highest level since 1986.

DAILY NEWS
📎 The euro jumped on Monday after a convincing and historic win by the French far right in the first round of parliamentary elections fell slightly short of some expectations, leaving the final result dependent on party deals before a second round next weekend.
Meanwhile, the yen hovered around a 38-year low after data showed Japan's economy shrank more than initially reported in the first quarter, leaving traders on alert for signs of intervention to prop up the currency. The euro was last 0.4% higher at $1.0759, around a two-week high. It has lost around 1.2% since the French far right triumphed in European parliamentary elections in early June, prompting President Emmanuel Macron to call a snap election in France.
📎 Gold prices weakened in Asian trade on Monday, taking limited support from increased expectations of U.S. interest rate cuts as traders awaited more cues from the Federal Reserve and U.S. economy this week. The yellow metal remained squarely within a trading range established through most of June, also making little headway as the dollar sank. Gold marks little gains as Sept rate cut bets increase
Sentiment towards metal markets, especially gold, remained strained even as traders increased their expectations for a September rate cut, following PCE price index data from last week.
📎 The U.S. dollar slipped lower in early European trade Monday ahead of the week’s key employment report, while the euro rallied after the first round of voting in the French elections. The dollar index has been hit by the strength of the euro Monday, with the single currency carrying the largest weight in the basket, but it was already on the back foot after Friday’s release of softer than expected inflation data.
Attention in this U.S. holiday-shortened week, with Thursday celebrated as Independence Day, will largely be on Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report as traders look for fresh indications on when the Fed might start to cut interest rates.

🌐 Japan's yen is at three-decade lows and under enough pressure to prompt strong official warnings of intervention to prop it up.
The yen has fallen despite Japan's first interest rate hike since 2007 and optimism about the economy. It traded at 153.24 per dollar on April 10, its weakest since 1990 and in real terms it is at its weakest since at least the 1970s. A weaker yen is a boon for Japanese exporters' profits, and for tourists visiting Japan who find their currencies going further, but it squeezes households by increasing import costs.
🌐 The dollar was firm on Thursday after hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data squashed lingering expectations of the Fed starting its rate-cutting cycle in June. Investor focus will now be on U.S. producer price data and the European Central Bank's policy meeting later in the day. Following the inflation data, traders drastically dialled back their bets on interest rate cuts this year as well as when the Federal Reserve will start its easing cycle.
Gold prices rebounded in Asian trade on Thursday after hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data dragged the yellow metal sharply off record highs, although safe haven demand and central bank buying kept prices close to recent peaks. Gold prices rebounded in Asian trade on Thursday after hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data dragged the yellow metal sharply off record highs, although safe haven demand and central bank buying kept prices close to recent peaks.
The yellow metal fell sharply in U.S. trade on Wednesday after consumer price index data showed U.S. inflation grew more than expected in March, remaining sticky.
The reading also saw the dollar surge to five-month highs, pressuring gold prices. Spot prices of the yellow metal slid 0.8% on Wednesday after touching record highs earlier this week.
