Contemporary text mentioned that he had a love marriage with Sulakshana (Maharani Sulakshana Devi) at the age of 17 and became Chakravartin at the of 19. He named his elder son Sallakshanavarman. Inscriptions also state that his commands reached the borders of the sea. The earlier inscriptions of his reign mentioned him as Shivabhakta, but he also patronized Vaishnavism and Jainism. Later he is mentioned as Parama Bhagwāta (Vaishnava). He issued Gold coined featuring seated Goddess Sri (Laxmi) on Lotus on one side, and the legend Shrimat Kirttivarmanmadeva on the other side.

According to contemporary text of 1095, After king Bhoja parmar of Dhara, Malava, his son king Jayasimha I, and later Bhoja's younger brother king Udayaditya also remained subordinated to the Chandel Empire. That's why the inscription of Kalanjara also tells the Kirttivarman conquered Malava.

The 1095 centuries's tamrpatras of Kirti Sagara mentioned; "The lord of the Lunar dynasty (Chandravansh), the Chandel dynasty, is the highest among the Kshatriyas. Victory to the ruler of that dynasty, who saved Bharat, and slew the Turks, the jewel of the Yadavas (Yaduvansh), Chakravartin Shrimad Kirtti-Varman Deva Chandel."

• Fourth victory over Ghaznavids In 1095 AD, Sultan Ibrahim surrounded Kalanjara with a massive army of 3-4 Lakh Turks. Ibrahim demanded Kirtivarman's surrender and conversion to Islam, but he refused by making joke of him. After which a fierce battle took place, in which he killed many turks, and ibrahim surrendered in fear. 1-2 lakh Turks were killed in battle. The Turks, along with Ibrahim, were taken captive by the Chandel Army. After surrendering Ibrahim escaped, the Chandelas brought the approx 2 lakh Turk captives to the other side of Kalanjara fort. Kirtivarman ordered a pit to be dug, where he personally beheaded the Turks, filling the river with their blood. He then washed the feet of Brahmin priests and the Vice-Chancellor with the bloods of Turk.

• Second and Third victory over Ghaznavids Before Maharaj Kirtivarman could strike, the Turks attacked. In the ensuing battle, Kirtivarman killed 3-4 generals of the Ghaznavids, while Mahmud fled away from battlefield. Pursuing Mahmud, he (Kirttivarman) reached mathura. Seeing the Flag of Chandel Empire, the Mahmud fled away from Mathura too. Following turks he reached Lahore and slaughtered them. Gov. Mahmud was fled and hid somewhere and he captured the state till there and reinstated the Tomar Rajputs as the feudal ruler of Delhi and returned Mahoba. This escalated tension between the Chandel and Ghaznavid empires.

• First victory over Shaznavids Around 1090 CE, Ghaznavids under Mahmud entered Ujjain, and destroyed many temples. King Udayaditya Parmar emidetly send a letter to Chandel capital Kalanjara and asked help from his Chakravartin, Samrat Kirtivarman Chandel. Within a few days of receiving the letter the Chandelas arrived in Malwa and with their help he recaptured Ujjain, forcing Mahmud to retreat. After some weeks, the Ghaznavid tormented Brahmins and captured the cows near the Betwa River, due to which many Brahmins to seek refuge in Samrat Kirtivarman. As soon he knew about the arrival of Turks in India and the news that Cows and Brahmins are torture he became Angry. Assuring them, Kirtivarman prepared for an invasion with 90000 Chandelas.
