This income supports forest conservation and benefits nearby communities, ensuring their cooperation and involvement. 🌱 To improve REDD+ project development and implementation across our target landscapes, USAID Morodok Baitang hosted a REDD+ Learning Event last week. The event brought together 21 participants responsible for project implementation from WCS Cambodia’s Keo Seima REDD+, NatureLife Cambodia’s Lomphat REDD+, Rising Phoenix’s Siem Pang REDD+, CI Cambodia’s Central Cardamom REDD+, and the USAID Morodok Baitang team. The goal was to share, learn, and exchange best practices for REDD+ implementation across the four project sites. All conservation partners are at different stages of REDD+ project development in their target areas. These efforts benefit both wildlife and communities, encouraging sustainable use to conserve critically endangered species. Our activities also include installing informative signboards in key villages and educating locals on the role of Trapeangs as vital water sources, especially during the dry season. The signboards also inform the local people to avoid any illegal activities in the Trapeang areas to protect species like the giant ibis, white-shouldered ibis, and other wild animals that rely on Trapeangs for water, food, and shelter. The opening of these two facilities is part of our Deforestation-Free Cashew Value Chain Program. This initiative aims to provide smallholder cashew farmer groups with the skills and facilities needed to process cashew nuts, enabling them to sell semi-processed nuts at higher prices than raw ones. This not only generates additional income for farmers but also incentivizes them to protect the forests and wildlife within their communities and wildlife sanctuaries. The events were attended by the district governors, the Mission Director of USAID Cambodia, the USAID Cambodia team, Olam Food Ingredients, SHE Agrocam, Handcrafted Cashew Nuts Stung Treng, and community members.
